OK, no offense guys, but aren't Harry Potter books for kids?

I've never read one for that reason, but are they difficult to read or is it just that the story is so good.

I don't mind the movies

I just finished the book and was shocked. I had guesses about the big death but not that one. Book 7 will be incredibly dark I think. Now we start another couple of years of waiting for the end.

The books are great for all ages and have been on the NY times best seller list for adults as well as children. Rowling is a gifted writer for everyone. By the the way I'm a Ph.D student and English teacher and she definitely uses vocabulary younger kids might find difficult. In fact if you have a decent understanding of Latin Roots you can figure out what the spells are before she describes them.

I especially liked the part where Harry is hanging on from over the cliff with one hand and Voldermort looking over him says "Harry.....I am your father".......

I'm only 16, so I've still got a kid left in me. But they are really good, an incredible plotline if you ever bother to read the whole series. It is difficult to read sometimes too, a very challenging read but its put together extremely well, you should really read it, everyone.

No offense taken.

I have kids. I first read Harry Potter #1 when my kind asked me to. I never try to miss an opportunity to interact with any of my kids. Food fights, wrestling, reading, chess, whatever. I actually enjoyed Rowling's style.
It ended up, I've only just read recently #4, and 5 just back-to-back. So now, I'm fresh with the ending of the last book only 2 weeks ago, so I'm really into the new release. My kids now have to wait for me on this one.

Locomotor mortis!

The movies don't do the writing justice. But i guess that's the case with most book > movie scripts. In all honesty, pick up the first one. I was hooked by about the 10th page. Read the first 4 books within one week (didn't have much going on in my life at that point.) They are written for children, so they are easy to read. But they are incredibly well written. And the story is terrific. I promise that if you pick one up, you won't be dissappointed. I've only met one person who read the first book and didn't immediately pick up the second (and she's an uptight bitch so it wasn't all that surprising.)

I think I would have been more accepting of the Harry potter books if I didn't have a couple of grown men in my newsroom act like a bunch of retarded kids over these books. They kept pushing and pushing and pushing them on me that I refused to read Harry Potter, just to spite them.

finished it about a week ago...Great book...i'm interested to see how the story will continue...i think she's left it open so that there can be more than only one book left in the series...not sure if thats good or bad but i love them...for anyone that hasn't read them i really do suggest them...the first book IMO is boring for about the first 2 chapters but you gotta suffer through it then its nearly impossible to put down...:) can't wait for the 7th

Is this a common thing among newsroom jockeys ?
My 40 year old bro-in-law works for one of the Canadian major dailies and you would swear his whole life revolved around HP when you go visit their place. It's creepy.
