Keep it. Surely people on this board will be interested in his every play next season. You can break it all down for them like they do for Flutie.

Sorry to dissapoint you but I think that RJ will be back next year. RJ didn't play up to his abilities but a below average oline when healthy was riddled with injuries all year long. I think he desrves anther chance. He is willing to take a pay cut to come back, and see Donahoe bringing him back with no quality free agent qb available. Not upgrading the LT position and taking a qb like Carr would mean anther losing season.

LOL @ Player.
Jungle and Doug I agree with you. I think he will also be back next year. Nothing will change though. The o-line will still be bad with him as our QB and if I had to bet on it he will also get injuied again.

"Keep it. Surely people on this board will be interested in his every play next season. You can break it all down for them like they do for Flutie."
I'm all for that! But let's track it all! Not just sacks then! INTs, TDs, everything, not just the stuff that the naysayers want to hear.
He will be back. And quite frankly, unless we start our schedule off with the first 5 games being against this year's playoff teams and Brown and Conaty and Jennings out, I'll be the first one to pipe up and start saying that we need to give our backup a chance, as long as it ain't Van Pelt. That is of course he plays only as well as he has so far.
Great thread BTW! Whatever happened to "supporting whichever QB was in there?"

Besides, that won't happen until '03 at the earliest!
What are you going to do when RJ's our starter next year?
Are you going to continue to mock him even when he's our starter?
Are ANY of our fans going to boo him next year?

i honestly think alot of people will boo him, i won't personally. but many fans will, to be honest i don't blame them, they spend their hard earned money on a ticket they can boo whoever they want. if you don't perform at a high level the fans will be all over you. it dosne't matter if your rob johnson, kurt warner, vince carter.

obviously, a lot of you guys DO still care about FLUTIE. That's why you have a coniption every time his name is brought up in a negative light.

December 19th, 2001, 1:02:01 PM
i think he deserves every bit of stick he gets regarding his play, but this crap about the locker room.? these things are usually fabrications from the media, they are always blown out of proportion. what probably happened was flutie said. "too bad the recievers had a tough time holding onto the ball" then the whole thing turned into the media saying. "flutie blames everybody but himself".

Now that entirely depends on RJ himself.
I have to give credit to the 45,000 fans that went to the last home game. We have more to complain about then Cleveland and New Orleans fans and we didn't throw beer bottles on the field.
Buffalo is the King of getting bad calls and I don't think we ever did that.

Rob will be back next year. I will be shocked if he's not. Does anyone really think TD and GW will cut him?
They will not admitt that they made the wrong decision regarding the Bills QB. Both should have been cut.

The only way Rob will renegotiate is if they offer him a better deal than he has now, and this one's pretty sweet.
shiva2999
December 20th, 2001, 2:34:21 PM
Wasn't it TD himself who said a few weeks ago that he wants Rob back 'but not under the terms of his present contract"? And wasn't it Rob himself who responded with "well, I guess if they don't want me to play here, I'll go play somewhere else"?
shiva2999
December 20th, 2001, 2:55:55 PM
Why would Rob renegotiate his contract if it didn't guarantee him more money than he's guaranteed now?

Why don't they renegotiate his damn contract RIGHT NOW. Let's get it out of the way. C'mon TD, is Rob comin' back next year or not? If so, what's the deal? If not, let's cut him and move on. It's not that complicated. I'm sure there are a dozen armchair gm's on this board that could draw up a contract even Rob can understand in less than an afternoon.
Let's give this franchise some direction.
What's it gonna be, boys? Does he stay or does he go?

I'm not big on drafting a QB in the first round look at the top 5 QB's in the NFL right now
1. Warner
2. Favre
3. Garcia
4. Manning
5. Gannon
Only one was a first round draft pick.
Starting QB's that we're drafted in the first round :
AFC EAst : Testervarde and Manning were first round picks
AFC Central : Couch
AFC West : None
NFC East : Mcnabb
NFC Central : ??? (Miller?)
NFC West : none

Robs contract will be the last thing that gets done. Have you seen ticket sales lately? How many season tickets do you think the Bills would sell next year if the fans knew 6 months in advance Rob was coming back again?
Ralph is a businessman, hes not dumb.

You gotta love this!
You aren't saying that we'd be better off with an unproven rookie QB behind our wonderful OL, and season ticket sales will soar, are you?
Or w/ VP, Mr. "here take the ball from me to ice the game", perhaps people will pay to see him be the first Bills' QB ever to have over 30 total TOs and over 20 INTs on top of that! Many that will determine the outcomes of games!
YEAH! Your reasoning is shining through bright and clear.
More like oozing out of my 6 month old's diapers...
:D JK w/ ya...
Teams that are below .500 this time of year ALL struggle for sales unless they're in markets where the seasons are constantly sold out. Here in Washington it's like that. No one wants to give up their seasons since it's so difficult to get them once you fall out. So they suck up the crap years in hopes of the good years. Buffalo's market ain't that large or rich. Down here a lot of hoyty-toyty's own seasons. You should see the TG parties. They look like Soirees! It's ridiculous. They wouldn't know what to do in our lot! lol

Someone piss in your cornflakes this week!
Is it OK w/ you if the FO waits to see how the ENTIRE cap situation is after the expansion draft and after we decide who we're cutting. I'm sure that TD is moving as fast as he can so that you won't have angina waiting for the decision to see if you'll be able to watch any of the games next year w/o having coronaries from waffling between wanting the Bills to win and RJ to play horribly!
I'm sure they're terribly sorry they haven't met YOUR timetable for making their moves! Ever heard of a salary cap?
666 is the only one w/ a thread worth thinking about on this page. I agree w/ ya 666. Rookie QBs are not the answer. I say take our chances later in the draft w/ one.
Also, the chances of an average QB playing well behind a very good OL are MUCH better than those of a very good QB playing behind a fair-to-poor OL. Right now that's all we have! A fair OL. We should utilize our top picks on OL-men, preferably an OT and another who can play any position like this guy Levi Jones. It would also be sweet if we can sign two off of FA. Nothing expensive, just two guys who have played in the NFL. Someone to replace guys like Farris, Carman, and Heimburger.

Readin' some of the posts from the prior page;
shiva,
Rob WON'T be signed at his current rate. It's too astronomical for next year. He may take less than he was making, b/c he has to evaluate how much he may get somewhere else. I can't imagine that other teams will be offering him huge dollar contracts w/o some sort of injury clauses. I'm sure that's what we'll do. It's in BOTH parties interests to do so. We protect our assets and interests, and Rob learns to protect himself so that he can continue to play injury free, and not get himself hurt for his own self-preservation sake.
It doesn't matter what ROB WANTS! What matters is what he can get competitively on the market. He may take a slight hit by staying here, but if he has to take a $3M hit, he'll probably go elsewhere. His agent will probably ask if the Bills are going to pick up the option on his contract; obviously the answer will be "No!" Then I'm sure he'll have some leeway for testing the waters unless he and the Bills strike deal very quickly.
If he finds out say the Skins are interested, as they are rumored to be, living in Skins land, then the Bills will probably have an idea of what Washington is willing to pay him, and if they don't offer a restructuring comparable to that, then Rob will probably say "later!"
I just can't imagine too many other teams offering up more than $4-5M for Rob, and that only w/ some serious durability clauses in his contract. We can match that by deferring his bonus due, and arrange it so that future hits wouldn't be any worse than the hit this offseason, and even less the longer we keep him.
So there are reasons as to why he'd stay.
