DF was left off for very obvious reasons...has he even won a playoff game???
Marino owns every passing record imaginable, so I went with him. Quickest release and best arm in history of NFL too. Still a Bills fan, just trying to give credit where it is due...

Apparently he can control YOU from California. Anyway, how is it considered "bashing" not to have included him on a list with such spectacular QB's, who have accomplished more in one season than he has in a so-called career? (NFL of course)
This wasn't Flutie bashing, so learn to read, and stop being so obsessed. I mentioned him in my response because I figured someone like you would have an objection to their hero not being included, that's all.

Ok, and your "reply" would have been great if you had left out both sentences.
Where is "here"? And who did YOU vote for? OK, the poll doesn't have to be 100% original, I just wanted to get an intelligent vote on it (still waiting) and to see how Kelly stacked up...if that's ok with you of course!

Dan Marino is the best QB of all time, look at the stats. That means he is clearly the best not to win a bowl. If you vote for any of the other three, it shows that you are retarded.

As if Flutie even belongs in the same category w/ ANY of those 4 QBs! Baloney!
gd,
Yes, DF was in many playoff games. The team only made it there on the merits of their O. Their D was consistently in the bottom tier of the league then. Remember, they lost that AFC CG on that forward fumble by Van Eeghen maybe? Someone from the Raiders that fumbled the ball forward knowing they wouldn't get the necessary yards. BIG controversy and a rule change as a result.
I don't think Marino is the best QB of the group to begin with. He's the best passer, but all three of the others were better overall QBs. Tarkenton probably the most versatile. Then Kelly. Fouts also a passer, but a great on at that and I think he's second to Marino in many of his records. S.D. also had better running games than Miami did thus no necesitating that throwing that Marino did.
I'd say Marino on the merits of his passing being enough to overcome his lack of QB skills in other areas, then Kelly, then Tark, then Fouts.
Flutie compares to none of the above and to mention him in the same sentence is to shame the others! Fouts and Marino both played when they were as old as Flutie.

WYS- I agree with about 90% of what you say...as usual. But I swear they were TAKKENTON's career records and not Fouts'. And yes, Tark probably was the most versatile; he still holds the scrambling record, right? But remember, he also played forever. Not only does Danny have the single season TD and yardage records (48 and 5084 respectively, I believe?), but also the career marks, which means he did it in less time. He was pretty durable too, only missing that season which saw the emergence of Scott Mitchell (perhaps we should penalize him for that outcome:) .
I hear Dan compared to Warner a lot. Kurt is awesome, but did Dan have half the offensive system (and 1000 yards to Marshall Faulk) or any of these run-after-catch yards Bruce Holt and Hakim get? Doesn't Kurt play against watered down defenses too? I would compare Warner more to Kelly-good arm, tough, slow runner, stats perhaps a little better because of great surrounding cast. Dan never really had a Thurman or Marshall...not in the least!
I agree, DF isn't qualified to even PRACTICE with the above (a lot of qb's aren't) but I just put it in, again, because I figured someone would bring it up!

Forget stats. The best quarterbacks are team leaders, guys who will do anything and take the punishment necessary to win. Quarterbacks when they took the field that took charge of the play calling and controlled the game. The choice is obvious, Jim Kelly

Dan Marino was easily the best of those four, aside from stats. He single-handedly took the Fins to the super bowl in 1984. He had no running back for practically his whole career (I would say he never had an RB, Abdul-Jabbar sucked). Dan was also a good leader.

Fouts played with very well respected running backs, Chuck Muncie and James Brooks. They had another back whose name is escaping me right now, he was the fullback though. His receivers were John Jefferson and Kellen Winslow, a very prolific pass catching tight end. ( did Lofton play for them?)
Yes they were Tarkenton's records, and more importantly, those later guys were the beneficiaries of various rules changes designed to open up the offense. Defenses were ahead of offenses in the late 70's and the powers that be wanted to make the game more exciting. So we actually are comparing apples and oranges by adding Tark to the other three. A comparison of Fouts and Marino is accurate because they were so very much like each in style. Kelly didn't have the accuracy of either.
I gotta go with Tarkenton because he played when qb's ran the show and the game was still a bit primitive in terms of what was allowed and what wasn't in the passing game, while tackling and even in blocking schemes.

Bodine you must never have saw Tarkenton. He was the very definition of being in control. Far far more than Jim Kelly. And yes I am a Bills fan.

You're right dennis. Marino is the best QB not to win a SB. Maybe the best player period.

Q: Why couldn't the Dolphins get a decent RB in there during the Marino years?
A: Marino's ego was too big to share the spotlight with a RB.
What else could it be? Are you telling me that Shula couldn't find one quality RB in 13 years. A RB would have helped poor Dan win his SB. Unless of course the team just played like SH-T during the game (Bills last 3 SBs).

If I went by stats alone I'd have to go with Marino, but there is more to it than that. I like Kelly's leadership and control of the game not to mention he is the toughest QB I've ever seen. However to have the other 2 on the list isn't really fair, the rules have changed, the season is longer and the playing conditions have improved drastically. Not many teams play in the bad weather anymore so stats have improved with the conditions. So being a Bills fan and really admiring the guy I'd have to say Kelly with a close second to Marino.
