View Full Version : What would have happened had the Bills given Todd Collins as many chances as Rob?

Does anyone remember Todd Collins? He put up good numbers in 1996 when Kelly was unable to play. When Kelly retired in 1997 Todd Collins was going to be the heir apparent at QB to the legendary Kelly. The no-huddle offense was scrapped for Collins. Collins struggled the next year throwing 12 TDS as to 13 INTS and failing to live up to expectations. The Bills gave up on him quick cutting him in 1998. He's now with the Chiefs as a backup. The Bills have got along fine without him but what if they gave him half as many chances as they've given Rob? Rob is probably better though, The Bills have a bright future if they fix their problems like the obvious ones.

The Bills would have a couple top 5 picks.

Wouldn't every team have a bright future if they fixed their problems?
The question is determinining the problems. The hard part is figuring out a way to fix them. That is what TD gets paid to do.

always,
Collins had just about all of '97 to start and played some in '96 and '95. He NEVER had anywhere near the good games that Rob's had!
It sucks, doesn't it! Now that Flutie's gone! Now you are reduced to hammering on RJ! That's OK! We have a crew of guys that you can join!
The real question should be "What are you going to do next year when Rob's our starter for the season opener and he actually plays well?"
Are ya gonna watch? Or are ya gonna not watch any games all year and be upset?

W/ a decent OL, he'll take 1/4 the hits he's taken this year!
You could make the same statement about 2/3 of the QBs in the league and you'd win!

I was in Chicago during a Bears/Chiefs preseason game this year. Old Todd was in, doing his thing in the third quarter. Ditka and a local Chicago guy were doing the play by play/commentary and they were actually laughing at him. Todd missed two wide open guys on slants, then threw a pick on a short out. Ditka eluded to how this was probably his last game in an NFL uniform and then said, and I'm paraphrasing, "now we know why he wasn't the answer in Buffalo when Jim Kelley retired." I'd never heard announcers laugh at someone's inept play till then. It was nasty.

Good numbers?
Well, he did singlehandily beat the Cowboys 10-7, and another game vs. the Colts like 13-10.
In '97 we had the worst 3rd down conversion rate in the history of the league. That's not good.

Hmmm!
Victories w/ only 10 and 13 points on the boards!
Maybe he's as good as Doug!
