View Full Version : Your Buffalo Rapids

The ABA team that is supposed to play in Buffalo next year announced it will be called the Buffalo Rapids. Still no home court for the team. Granted I will be shocked if the ABA is still alive next year, seeing teams go out of business in the middle of the season and teams move in the middle of the season.

And the funny part, the owner plans to build his own 6,500 seat arena in Buffalo. Yeah right, right next to the new Peace Bridge, the Adelphia building downtown, the E-Zone on the water front, and all those other small arenas that were supposed to be in Lancaster and West Seneca.

What a joke

So where are the Rapids in Buffalo? NF has some rapids.

I bet we will never see the team play. I would be suprised if the league makes it till next October or whenever they start. The defending champions Arkansas something or anothers already dropped out of the league.

But that logo is pretty cool.

yeah...the rumors I've heard about the ABA and who can get in and how the players get paid...heck, I bet I could make an ABA team. :D

But I agree...I'm not bankin' on seeing the team active yet and even so, it's almost like a minor minor-league at this point. It's a shame considering some of the history of the league

Besides, who could ever forget the drama down in Nashville? First the team hires a newbie coach...a female no less, and she doesn't do badly. Then she gets into a battle with one of the owners over playing time, and fires her on the court. Next, that owner gets hospitalized and the coach gets her job back. Finally, she basically says,"the hell with it" and leaves.

Have I described the year that was the Nashville Rhythm or the past few weeks of whatever daytime drama you care to insert here? :)

Not only could you play for the team, but I bet you could own an ABA team too. It seems that anyone with a job can buy a team. You can tell it is a great league when you can apply for a team on the leagues website.

Now if Buffalo got a CBA team I might go check it out as long Isiah Thomas was not involved with the league somehow.

Those are nice uniforms. And the team has a website too BuffaloRapids.com (http://www.buffalorapids.com) which is not much now. But that seems to be more then other teams have. But they still got big problems, #1 they have no place to play.

But they still got big problems, #1 they have no place to play.I'd go see them at the Arena (they would match the floor:)) but I can't see that happening. They play somewhere poor and go the same way as the Wings.

Wow, the Buffalo Wings, that is pulling one from the past. The Wings still run local roller hockey leagues in Buffalo, but there is no pro roller hockey anywhere. I could see them (the Rapids) playing at Buff State, just they would be in the other half of the arena. The arena is too expensive to rent for anyone that is not owned by the Sabres. The Rochester Razorsharks are going to play at the BCA I guess. Speaking of Rochester, they have some ugly uniforms.

And Buffalo hired a coach and GM they said on WGR today, but I can't remember his name and they don't have on the Rapids website or the ABA site.

Rich Jacob, I believe. He used to work with the New York Knicks and all local college basketball teams.

Here's TBN's story on coach Jacob.
http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20050427/1017348.asp

Now here's what I found very strange...Another Buffalo native, Kevin Cadle, a highly respected coach on the pro circuit in England, was strongly considered for the position. Nice also reached out to former NBA players - including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - but says Jacob is a better fit. That would have been interesting.

I like how the floor at HSBC reflects the colors of the Braves.

The colors on the floor of the Arena are part of the offical Arena color scheme. I doubt it has anything to do with the Braves.

BTW, Rich Jacob is the head of the Sports Management program at Medaille College.

Yeah I didn't write they did it on purpose, I just wrote that they resemble each other.

The Rapids have a new owner after Gary Nice was tossed out of the league for not meeting payroll. The Rapids have no home court after they were tossed from the Flick after Nce could not pay the rent.

So who is the new owner.......Dan Robbie, yes the son of former Dolphins owner Joe Robbie.

http://www.abalive.com/news/releases/?newsid=2005122306008

There is rumors the Rochester Razorsharks may bail on the ABA after the season for the NBA D-League. Maybe Buffalo will follow.

According to the article in the D&C where I read it, the NBADL plays in the winter like the NBA. I know last weekend I was at my dads and flipping throught the channels and there was an NBADL game on the NBA Channel.

No, they play in July-August area. Unless they changed it. They might have since they are now considered the NBA's "minor league".

Okay Jeff, I did some reseach and found the NBADL now plays from November to Apil. Probalby they can get more people in the arenas in the winter then in the summer.
