Okay, sort of. The MSG Network. :?:

I guess with the loss of the Mets to another network and the Rangers games being blacked out in Buffalo, signing on the Sabres for 50-60 games was a logical choice for the network. More from Alan Pergament in TBN...

Adelphia deal stalling with MSG

10/9/2004
By ALAN PERGAMENT

This is what I'm thinking:

It has been a couple of weeks since reports surfaced that the Madison Square Garden Network was negotiating with Adelphia to carry Buffalo Sabres games locally, thereby allowing the cable operator to dissolve the Empire Sports Network.

According to sources, the deal looked imminent a few weeks ago but has stalled for some unknown reason, perhaps because the NHL lockout has removed any need for urgency.

Tom Haywood, Adelphia's local executive, gave the same comment this week that he has given for about a year: "We're talking with several networks."

It would be sad to see Empire go, though it already is a shell of itself and has pretty much been gone from public consciousness. It doesn't even carry local sports shows on weekends, when the Bills, colleges and high schools have their busiest schedules.

MSG would seem to have a programming hole in 2005 now that the New York Mets have paid $54 million to opt out of their deal with the regional sports network after next season. MSG still may hope to make a deal to keep some games, but the Mets reportedly are considering starting their own channel like the Yankees did with YES or joining YES.

Without the Mets, MSG would certainly be less attractive to Western New York cable subscribers. The New York Knicks would be the primary MSG attraction for local cable subscribers here, and this isn't a big NBA territory.

This is the Buffalo News that reported it, not aways the best source. But as long as the games are on, it don't matter to me, but I will Empire because Howard Simon.

As long as Jeanerette is calling the games, I don't care what channel it's on. I'll really miss Hockey Hotline tremendously however.

I remember this being posted over a year ago and people laughing at it.

Why would the NHL lockout make this less imminent from Adelphia's standpoint? Without hockey, Empire must be bleeding cash more than with hockey.

This would suck...no Hockey Hotline, Rangers games get precedence, no Simoncast, crap...

Since there is no hockey, Empire is now the TV home of the Toronto Raptors.

Simoncast will be off the air soon anyways. Howard was hired by GR to host a morning show. :(

And Rangers game wouldn't have precedence here. They are blackedout.

Well, I know my father hopes that the Sabres end up on MSG because today Time Warner sent a letter saying Empire will no longer be available. My dad lives in Akron NY, still in Erie County and it was dropped from his normal cable a year or so ago, but you could get it for an extra $5 a month with some other sports channels, now that won't even be offered. This will hurt the Sabres if they go back to Empire, because the only people that will be able to see Sabres games on TV are the ones with Adelphia, and not everyone in the Buffalo area has Adelphia. Most of the people who have season tickets that site around me are from out his way in the Akron/Alden way and they have Time Warner. It is hard to see a hockey team when half of the fan base, those in Canada and those with Time Warner cable can't see the road games. Granted with the never ending lockout it don't really matter.

Anyone with a satellite dish can get Empire too.

What the Sabres should do is broadcast in HDTV. I watch my first bit of NHL hockey in HD, as they showed a replay of Colorado/Chicago the other day on HD Net. It is ****ing amazing.
