View Full Version : Wireless router question

Over a month and a half ago, I got a wireless router for my laptop.
Every once in a while it just stops working (fetching www pages) yet the "Wireless Status" almost always remains "Excellent". I go in to the preferences tinker with stuff, essentially doing nothing (switch stuff, switch stuf back and apply), and it still doesn't work. Again... doesn't work. Again... doesn't work. Again... finally works (for about 15 min).
What am I doing wrong?? What can I do different?? Is it just the risk of wireless??
(I got Linksys D-Link)

Sounds like you have an acute discombobulation of the throckmorton. No seriously, although I cannot tell you what exactly is wrong, from my experiences as a design engineer, I think it is likely (but not definetly) a hardware issue. SW usually does not have intermittent failures unless you have a serious timing issue.

when in doubt Power Cycle (aka turn off your router/modem) if you're still showing a stong connection, you're communicating with the router fine, it might be the modem to the router that might be giving you fits...when you're tinkering with it, go into the interface of the linksys...usually 192.168.1.1 in a web browser and go to the "Status" button, see if you're pulling a WAN IP address...if you are, and you're using DHCP...try a DHCP release/renew...the problem you might be having is that your router isn't refreshing the lease from your ISP

Oh yeah, it never hurts to upgrade your firmware either...

Definitely go for the firmware upgrade. Find out the model of the router itself, the model you listed is the adapter.
Downloads and instructions can be found here (assuming you have a Dlink router as well): http://support.dlink.com

Hey Jeff, did you have any luck? GoBills and JT are correct, first thing to do is check the firmware. I don't have wireless so i don't know anything. I posted your question on a hardware enthusiast site, and the guy who had experience with Linksys said that a firmware update should do the trick.

Start simple, reinstall the ethernet drivers. Check the documentation on the wireless access card and see if they prefer you use their software to run the connection over Microsofts.
Also, make sure that the router isn't near anything that can interfere with the signal, i.e. other transmitting devices like a cordless phone or fm transmitter/receiver (dish network uses these), and/or is not in extremely hot conditions. I've noticed from time to time that these things overheat.
At worst, you should upgrade the firmware. Note that you ~may~ need to reconfigure the router after you perform this upgrade, kind of a pain in the ass. So jot down any info from the wizard and even have a spare cat 5 ethernet card available.
You could also go out and buy anther $100 802.11g network kit, which is what I did when my SMC barracade gave me ****.

USB is another element. How many devices do you have on your usb controller? You may also want to check your PC for a BIOS update. Dell has very good support for this.
Sometimes USB detachable media (memory stick or flash memory readers) interfear with ethernet USB devices.
What OS are you on? Micrsoft XP SP2 came out a few months back, and from personal experince, I've noticed pc's strangely dropping off my network after this upgrade on a periodic basis. No proof, but I have a hunch they're TCP/IP implementation has changed in some way.
