BRIGHTON, N.Y. (AP) -- As much as Derek Roy would rather be wearing a Buffalo Sabres uniform, the forward was happy to be back on the ice -- even if it's in the minors.

Roy figures it was better to be opening training camp with the AHL's Rochester Americans on Tuesday than being locked out by the NHL. And better to be skating instead of fielding questions regarding the labor dispute. That's how Roy spent most of his summer back home in Ottawa.

``It was pretty much a daily routine,'' Roy said after practice. ``Get up out of bed, go walk around and somebody's asking about it. It was getting pretty repetitive. ... It's awesome to start playing a real game.''

That's good. In the case that the NHL comes back to life, Roy will have sharpened his skills even more.

The big payoff will be the seasoning Vanek gets, IMO.

I love the way that Rochester team looks this season. Very strong in the forward positions. I'll also be keeping a close eye on Miller. He needs to own that league again...No steps backwards like last years playoffs.
