Larry Brooks is the biggest joke in sports writing. He created this rediculous rumor that the B's are considering trading Joe Thornton. Even if he is struggling now, he is what, only 23 or 24 yrs old. You don't trade superstars. And no, the Maple Leafs will not get him, and neither will any team for that matter. Joe Thornton gets better every year I watch him play. He is big, fast, can set up people, drives to the net, grinds it out in the corners, can lay out the big hits, and can SCORE!!!! He is the Bruins franchise. Amen.

Thornton is awesome. I cannot believe the Bruins would trade him and I do not think they will. I'd love to have him, but our organization would never pay his salary and the Bruins would be stupid to trade him w/in the division if they choose to trade him.

Is he under contract? If he isn't, then he may hold out for a trade.

He's pricey and he struggled in the playoffs. I realize he's injured, but IF Boston is willing to trade him, this would be the time they would do it.

3/4 of Brooks' columns originate in his ass, however.

Thornton is a Group II RFA.

It will be interesting to see if he tries to force a trade out of Boston ala Jason Allison and Kyle McLaren.

Satan and Connolly to the Bruins for Thornton and a bag of pucks.

Anything it took.

Personally, I don't see the Sabres having the type of players that Boston would want in return.

I'd expect them to want a young All-Star player in return like Dany Heatley.

I'd be willing to give up Drury (for the NE draw), Vanek (to fill the young franchise guy slot), and a guy like Afinogenov, Kotalik, or Dumont.

Satan and Connolly wouldn't even have gotten you Boynton.

I can see that....But I don't know if your 3rd player is good enough.

Drury
Vanek
Roy/Kalinin/Miller - A player of that stature might make Boston consider it over a Dumont, Kotalik or Afinogenov.

I doubt they'd have too much interest in Miller, except perhaps as a trade asset.

They have Raycroft in Boston, Toivonen at Providence, and Matti Kaltiainen at Boston College.

They are pretty set in net.

And while I'd probably part with Roy or Kalinin to get Thornton, I'd try my hardest not to have to give up guys like them or Paille, Stafford, Gaustad, and a few others that I really like as solid character guys moving forward.

I like the idea of just signing him to an offer sheet of a 5 year deal or so, gambling that they would be 5 high first rounders if accepted. He might be worth it. It's quite a gamble, but this team is super young.

I don't like going that route without knowing what's up with the CBA.

I wouldn't want to be locked into a situation where one player is making in the neighborhood of 1/3 of the team's entire payroll.

The Sabres won't be able to field a consistent winner if they can't surround Thornton with any other talent because his contract give them no flexibility or even the ability to keep other talented guys. Like say Vanek after his rookie deal expires.
