the majority of people who say madden is king, nothing can compete with madden blah blah blah, have never even played another football game other then madden, so they cant say what is truely good and what isnt. iam a big time sega/espn sports fan. for the most part i find espn to make better games then EA. better football, hockey, basketball, etc. and this year will probably be no exception. though i will play madden just to see which game ilike best. but madden will really have to blow me away. madden is so unrealistic, so fake looking, its boring. at least in years past. the only reason why most folks buy madden is b/c its what they have been playing there whole lives and they know nothing else. PERIOD!!

Exactly. Those graphics are nothing special. Choppy and cartoonish at best. I'm not impressed at all with that.

Dude, I've played EVERY football game out there every year they come out just to see if any of them beat Madden. Let me tell you, from someone who HAS played other than Madden, NO OTHER GAME CAN TOUCH MADDEN!!! The only thing any other game, such as ESPN's version can touch over Madden would be the graphics. But I'm not playing these games just for how they look, I'm playing them because of their gameplay ability! There's no doubt those graphics are AWESOME for the ESPN game, but as far as gameplay, they couldn't come close to Madden last year, the year before, the year before and I'm certain that trend will continue this year!

So get off the, "those who say Madden is king have never played any other games," because that is entirely FALSE. All in all, if there were a poll as to what is the best, ALL TIME, football game out there, Madden would win in a LANDSLIDE!

ive played both espn and madden and some gameday(d'oh!) and the gameplay is why i have bought madden since its existence and no game i repeat no game comes close to madden in that area

ive stated this in the video game section that after playing espn i came away w/ the feeling of playing a kids game

but i will yet again try espn cuz some of the features seem cool and i will try to feel as ambitious as some of the espn fanboys but if the game play is lacking it wont change my mind in the least

if you wrap crap in gift wrap and put a bow on it its still crap

Madden and NCAA Football work together, you get to draft real players, dynasty mode rocks, a litte more realism ... people don't like it for the marketing, people buy it for realism and features, I prefer Madden for these reasons!

I am going to go with ESPN NHL over EA NHL to test drive the ESPN line, see how it is though.

Every year I play em all, and every year I say Madden is the best. Everyoen says its the best because it is! Nothing comes close. Something may look better but gameplay sucks. Madden sets the bar and everyone else falls by the waist side.

ESPN/Sega Football has been on par with the Madden Games for years!! The reason that Madden sells is because of superior marketing and name recognition.

Don't believe me? IGNs reviews of the last two years in football games. These are non biased Madden vs. ESPN/Sega

NFL 2K3 gets a 9.1 at IGN (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/367/367317p1.html)
Madden NFL 2003 gets a 8.8 at IGN (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/367/367194p1.html)
Madden 2004 gets a 9.4 at IGN (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/433/433039p1.html)
ESPN NFL Football (2k4) gets a 9.3 at IGN (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/436/436815p1.html)

Just think its IGN? WRONG!!

if graphics ruled the gaming industry, ESPN would be up there. The problem is, the graphics are not the important thing. Madden has been around for 15 years. That is called EXPERIENCE. I played the 2k series for 2 years. It was cool until PS2 came out. Chris Berman is cool, but I'm not gonna play a game based on that. I prefer realistic defenses, running game, and an overall "football" feel to the game. Details are what drive the game. An NFL logo on the damn gloves does nothing for me.

Marketing has nothing to do with it either. I buy the new Madden because it is the original master. If I want an arcade game, I'll play Donkey Kong. If I want REAL FOOTBALL SIMULATION, I play MAdden.

also, the people that grade games, grade 100's of games a year. These people are usually involved in online role playing, and simulation games. A football game that allows you to run sweeps easily, and throw bombs with little resistance is going to be a favorite of theirs. Plus, the "amazing" graphics. I don't care what a critic says.

First, lemme say that I agree that the first Playstation Sega 2k game sucked. I hated Sega NFL 2k2 and agree with everything you have to say about it being completely arcadey. The game was way too fast and for that reason I didn't buy it.

But, since then Sega has refined their football and made the game slow and very much or more the sim that Madden is.

HMMM Lets see......

To quote IGN on NFL 2k3

Gameplay: Franchise
Gameplay has always been the series' strongest asset, and that continues with 2K3. This is the most realistic playing football game around, and that stretches from the field to the front office. SEGA and VC have done an excellent job weaving a sim-style football game with an intricate, nuanced management game. The result is the total football experience, an experience heretofore only hinted at by previous games in the genre.

In fact......

While the rabid fans out there think that sounds like paradise (and it is), it also points out a problem SEGA is going to have going forward. It can be summed up in one axiom: "With great realism comes great responsibility." Putting a lot of pressure on gamers can work against the overall fun of the game. It's safe to say that SEGA has built its fan base out of the diehardest of the diehard, but an overly technical, overly simmy game may alienate the casual gamer. While the controls are easy to learn, it's tough to teach years of both general and specific football knowledge to newcomers who are looking for a fun game to play. Madden faces the same kind of problems, but seems a little more forgiving than 2K3 in terms of difficulty, especially in the higher settings. Point blank, the learning curve is too steep for the casual gamer.

That goes for all Sega Sports titles.

If I want REAL FOOTBALL SIMULATION, I play MAdden.

If you call scrambling indefinately with Michael Vick and then throwing a perfect bomb off your back foot while from 30 yards in the backfield realistic. Not only that, how bout that Brian Finneran who supposably has a 58in verticle leap and catches every bomb in sight. Here's another quote for ya from IGN.

4. The Pack Ain't Back: Brian Finneran can go back to just being a crappy receiver because jet packing is gone. Last year, some players in the game actually were given a vertical leap of 58-inches. This year, things are back to reality, more like 35-inches. This eliminates the days of throwing behind the receiver while the defense watches helplessly as guys like Finneran and Tyrone Calico jumped up to snatch the ball every time.

http://sports.ign.com/articles/525/525508p2.html

also, the people that grade games, grade 100's of games a year. These people are usually involved in online role playing, and simulation games.

If you are tired of reading expert opinions, then how about actual gamers who don't do 100 reviews a year. Here's a place called videogamereviews.com that lets the consumer give his own take. Lets tally up the scores....

ESPN NFL Football (2K4)
51 Reviews
Average Score: 4.84 out of 5 (http://www.videogamereview.com/X,Box/ESPN,NFL,Football/PRD_172188_4167crx.aspx)

Madden NFL 2004
70 Reviews
Average Score: 3.61 out of 5 (http://www.videogamereview.com/X,Box/Madden,NFL,2004/PRD_156989_4167crx.aspx)

This could be the year Madden is challenged. ESPN has added some very interesting options and innovations to their game and at $19.99 it almost quarantees everyone will try it. It will definately out sell Madden in number of games sold but probably not in revenue.

I have played every football game since back on atari to now.... and i still like madden... did i try espn last year?... you betcha i did. I didn't like the passing in it and the running was just really odd.... the graphics were very good. better then maddens last year.. but its the gameplay and other things like espn trying to select a play .. or even trying to get to what part of the menu you want to access was just insane.. I felt like it was a pain in the @$$ just to get into a game to play.. and then once i did.. the gameplay was just wrong. Madden is more user friendly.. and better gameplay... last years espn was definitely "pretty and stunning" but what a game looks like doesn't determine it. I will get ESPN this year.. and for only $20.. who wouldnt?.... But i still believe Madden will be better. I dont believe they are putting the game at $20 just cuz its crap... not at all.. i think they are trying what they can to get their name out there more then madden.. that more people will buy their game then madden.. which is possibly true at only $20. I will play both games open minded as i do every year... and see who wins this year... if espn can fix some things they could take madden over as my favorite football game. Both games from last year have flaws.. it all depends on who adds more and who fixes the their problems better.

once again, I DON"T CARE HOW MANY QUOTES YOU TAKE FROM A VIDEO GAME SITE. I care about the game. Try the All-Madden Mode, and try to run an offense. Madden knows football. Stuart Scott does not. I don't know who is working on a game that costs 20 dollars. But, something's gotta give. Who can they afford to pay, and/or how many advancements did they make to the game? Somebody's not getting paid.

Sega NBA, however, is a superior game than NBA LIVE.

if thats how you get beat , i see why you play nfl 2k

i am buying both this yr and will be open minded but if the gameplay is even remotely close to previous games in the espn franchise then madden will be the winner

im gonna make an obscure refference, anyone remember the running back for the eagles , vaughn hebron he used to run leaning forward low to the ground w/ his shoulders way out....
well thats how all the running backs seemed to be in espn football
