Meanwhile, Martinez's agent, Fernando Cuza, also said it was regrettable that Martinez's remarks last Friday in Texas were taken to mean he intended to leave after the season. "What Pedro said did not come out the way it was intended," Cuza insisted. "Negotiations during the season can be very distracting for both a player and his teammates, and after giving the club an extra month, Pedro decided it was best to stop talks now.

"But it is our intention to talk again with the Red Sox after the season in hopes of getting a deal done. If we can't, then Pedro will file for free agency."

This was in todays Boston Globe.

From what I heard, he didn't rule the Sox out. What he did say was that there would be no "hometown discount" once the season was over, so the Sox would have to compete against every other team interested in him.

Which sounds like he is interested in the highest bidder.

He actually did offer a discount but the Sox stood silent. But around here (providence ri) you would of thought he was already wearing pinstripes. I am confident he will sign with the Sox after the season.

I will be as mad as can be if the yanks go out and even make an offer to this guy let alone sign him. I despise this little punk and he doesn't deserve to put on the pinstripes. Yes he's been a great pitcher for a long time but those days are gone and the yanks would be making a huge mistake throwing a ton of $ at him. Honestly, even if he was pedro of '99 i wouldn't want him. There's certain guys I just never want to see in a Yankee uni and he's one of them.

Years ago I remember Yankee fans saying the same thing about Clemens.

Clemens never looked into the Yankee dugout with his finger pointing to his head saying "I'll hit you right here" to the Yanks catcher . . .

Regardless, I agree, DO NOT throw a lot of money atr Pedro. He is a risk in the clubhouse as well as on the mound health wise.

It wasn't "I'll hit you right here" it was I'll remember. Anyway GS has the final say and if it means thowing an obscene amount of money at Pedro just to spite the Sox he will, and he has don't forget Contreas the Sox were on the cusp then the "Empire" stepped in an offered like 3 mill a year more. Thanks Though:jumpnclap

GS didn't jump at the Manny bait, so don't count on it.

And are you hoping the Yanks get him next year?

BigPapi

HELL NO!! Pedro is till one of the best in the game and it would be nice to see him stay in Boston. Also the Manny thing was different as the Sox kind of threw him out there so it would not have been as fun for GS to grab him, but Pedro the most hated Red Sox putting on pinstripes GS would love it as would 99% of the Yankee fans.

Pedro is no longer one of the best in the game and he proved that during the series against the Yanks. He lost pivotal game 3 then blew Game 7, a few years ago he was the best P in baseball but those days are gone.

Years ago I remember Yankee fans saying the same thing about Clemens.

I never said that about Clemens or Boggs. I wanted Clemens when he was a FA after the '96 season, I didn't want him when we traded for him b/c I thought we gave up a little much to get him but i welcomed him. I will never be able to root for Pedro, NEVER! He does not deserve the right to put on a Yankee uniform, he doesn't even deserve to play for the Sox- he should be back losing in Montreal or someplace like that.

If you don't believe he has dropped a few pegs then you are kidding yourself. He was great a few years ago but now he's just good and even when he was great he always broke down in the 2nd half and was useless anyway. The man had a a 4-0 lead in Game 7 then a 5-2 lead and could not hold, big time pitchers- guys who are supposed to be the best in the game don't blow games like that. So keep on believing that Pedro is still great and keep on believing that the Sox will win the World Series as well:funnyguy:

Saying that Pedro is still not one of the best is just stupid.

I actually agree, reading my post it looks a bit foolish. My point was he is not anywhere near the elite level he was on a few years ago. He is still one of the better pitcher's in the game but not the best anymore.

Looking around I can't find 5 starting pitchers without including Pedro also the game 7 comment, I think Kerry Woods is pretty good but he lost a game 7 last year as well. You should look at the body of work not just one stat.

Kerry Wood is young and never had any postseason experience. For a pitcher as great as Pedro he is only 3-2 in the postseason and blew his team's chance to reach the WS.

At this point I would take( I am not including Clemens even though he is pitching better than anyone right now, I expect he'll settle down at some point):

Barry Zito
Mark Mulder
Curt Schilling
Mark Prior(when healthy)
Randy Johnson
Josh Beckett
Matt Clement
Kerry Wood
Kevin Brown(like Johnson he's old but they haven't lost much unlike Pedro)

I don't think it's as bad as you make it and please don't put the blame for game 7 squarley on him that would be like saying Rivera is not a great closer b/c he blew game 7 of the world series in 2001, which is obviously not true b/c of his body of work which if you look at Pedro's even after his injury season in 2001 he is 38-10 not to bad.

I'm going to stop debating this b/c you make it sound like Pedro is frickin 0 for the millenium since his injury. I do respect your opinion but like it or not you are in the minority when it comes to
your thoughts on Pedro.

Again I'm not trying to say he sucks but I just don't think he's on that elite level anymore. I think alot has to do w/ his size and his body breaking down, do you think he's still as great as he was for most of his career?

BigPapi
May 13th, 2004, 4:12:37 PM
Yes he is still great.
