Here's my ideal draft for the Bills. None of it will probably pan out, but I'm hoping it could look something like this.
1st Rd (#7): Trade our second-round pick in 2005 and our #13 pick this year to Cleveland to acquire the #7 pick. SELECT: QB Ben Roethlisberger - Miami (OH).....barring that he falls past the top 4. Roethlisberger is a franchise quarterback. He's got a strong arm, ideal size, and can thrown accurately on the run. He will fit perfectly in Buffalo's offense alongside Willis McGahee for years to come. If he falls a bit in the draft and we can get him, I have no problem giving up a second-rounder in 2005, knowing that we may quite possibly acquire a first-rounder for Travis Henry in next year's draft.
2nd Rd (#43): SELECT: WR Rashaun Woods - Oklahoma State. The Bills should address their need for a wide receiver in the second round where a few stud wideouts could be around, like M. Clayton, M. Jenkins, and R. Woods. I would go with R. Woods in a heartbeat if he's there. This guy has great hands and technique, runs precise routes, and answered questions about his speed by running in the 4.5 area at his workout. He was incredibly productive at Okla St. though opposing defenses concentrated mainly on shutting him down. He can step right in now and be a perfect compliment to Moulds as our #2 receiver, and allow Josh Reed to move back to the slot.
3rd Rd (#74): SELECT: DE Isaac Hilton - Hampton. In the third round, there figures to be a handful of defensive ends available which really intrigue me with their speed and potential. I would be happy with any of: Isaac Hilton, Travis LaBoy, Jason Babin, or even Bobby McCray. I would select Isaac Hilton here because he has the potential to become the speed-rusher the Bills lack. The Bills need an end who can get to the quarterback and who to do that better than a defensive end who runs a 4.49-forty. This guy has blazing speed, is great in pursuit, and has great acceleration. He draws many comparisons to K. Gbaja-Biamila, and could develop into a great pass-rusher if he reaches his potential. He's a little unpolished and raw, but looks to be a good third-down rusher at least in the beginning.
4th Rd (#109): SELECT: TE Ben Utecht - Minnesota. The Bills need a pass-catching tight end and there should be a few available in the fourth round. Ben Hartsock and Chris Cooley are also options here, and I would be happy with either of those two, but if Utecht was available here, I couldn't pass him up. This guy is one of the best deep threat for tight ends in the draft. He's got outstanding hands, has the ability to catch the ball over his shoulder, and gives the Bills a viable receiving option at tight end. He needs to develop as a blocker, but the Bills have a good blocking tight end in Campbell.
5th Rd (#144): SELECT: G Shannon Snell - Florida. The Bills need depth at the offensive line position, particularly at guard. Snell would be a great value pick here. He's got good size for a guard, physically imposing with experience and technique. He also has the potential to become a starter in the NFL. He will give the Bills depth on the O-Line and with hard work, this guy could be a steal.
7th (#207): SELECT: S Kentrell Curry - Georgia. After the Bills address all of their offensive needs, they turn to the defensive side of the ball in the second round. There should be one of a few safeties which fall to this late point in the draft. Kentrell Curry, J.R. Reed, Rashad Baker, and Arnold Parker all interest me cause of their speed and potential. I would go with Kentrell Curry, coming off an injury, because to me he has the biggest upside. Curry has tremendous raw skills, good size and runs a 4.36-forty. If he reaches his potential and does not get hampered by injures, in a few years he could develop into a ball-hawking safety next to Lawyer Milloy.
7th (#214): SELECT: DT Amon Gordon - Stanford. Gordon left Stanford a year early and should probably have stayed in school. He's raw and unpolished, however, he has a great deal of upside and would have a few years to learn behind Pat Williams and Sam Adams. This guy is inexperienced and undersized, but intrigues me with his quickness and athleticism. If he reaches his potential, he could develop into a solid interior pass rusher. Projected to be more of a 5th or 6th round selection, I'm hoping he falls into the 7th.
This is my ideal Bills draft. The earlier rounds are filled with offense, because I feel like our defense is pretty set and our offense is weak. Roethlisberger, Woods, Utecht, along with McGahee would give us a amazing young crop of offensive players. I. Hilton is my dark horse. With 4.49 speed, he could become an incredible pass-rusher. The other picks are guys that have a lot of upside, but may or may not pan out. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.
