View Full Version : If Big Ben Falls

If Roethlisberger falls down out of the top 4, barring any teams trading up from 4-10, it is likely that Pittsburgh will grab him with the #11 pick. I don't understand how many of you can be content with getting P.Rivers at #13 when this stud is so close to our grasp.
Roethlisberger is a stud. He is hands down a much better quarterback then P.Rivers. He is huge, has a rocket arm, is impossible to sack, and can throw on the run. He carried Miami (OH) to a one-loss season and a top 10 ranking at the end of the year. At the end of this year, Rivers was considered a late first round, early second round prospect. Big Ben has been a top-3 prospect throughout the entire year, and has only improved his stock through great workouts.
If Roethlisberger falls out of the Top 10 it is a travesty. Whats an even greater travesty is if the Bills let him get snatched two picks in front of us and end up settling with Rivers. Rivers will be good, but Ben is going to be great. Would it be out of line to think that the Bills should trade up three spots to the #10 spot if Roethlisberger falls. Houston would fall back to #13, gain an extra pick, and still be able to land on of their targeted DE, DT, or CB...and we would be able to snatch Big Ben right in front of the Steelers.
I would be heartbroken if the Bills let the Steelers get the steal of the draft with Roethlisberger at #11. Please TD don't settle for Rivers at #13 if Ben is falling. Moving up three picks would not cost a great deal and could ensure us our franchise quarterback for many years to come.
What do you guys think of trading up a few spots if Ben is falling? I know many of you have your hearts set on Rivers, but let me assure you, Roethlisberger is hands down a much better player than Rivers. If Ben is within reach, we have to go get this guy. He would be a perfect fit for the Bills. Just imagine a tandem of Roethlisberger and McGahee for years to come.....along with a young wideout like Woods, Clayton, or Jenkins in the second. With Roethlisberger in the 1st, and one of the premier second-tier wideouts left in the second.....I wouldn't even care about the rest of our draft, my wishes would already have come true.

I agree. Roethlisberger is the best available. I think he'll be taken in the Top 4.

Rivers is smarter, so I'd still take Phillip.

Ive seen crazier things happen. Kiper's latest mock draft has Pittsburgh taking him at #11. Not that it means its gonna happen, but theres a possibility he could be there at #11. Why not get up there and grab him a pick or two earlier.

Waht would the Bills have to give up to move up?

I still think the Steelers are going to draft Hall.

Rivers sees the field better and has a quicker release. Therefore i'd take Rivers. Big Ben is just more of an athlete and has more strength. I'll take either, but i'd rather have Rivers.

Rivers has the best intangilbles of any of the top three. May not be as physically gifted as Eli or Ben, but is a better field general.

I don't know, Pete. I've said before that I'd be thrilled with either guy, but given the unlikely scenerio that both were available to Buffalo (obviously after a trade-up) I think I'd have to go with Ben. I think they're about even on the intangibles. Rivers has had some great athletes around him, thanks to Chuck D'Amato's recruiting--Tory Holt, Jerricho Cotchery, T.A. McClendon, etc... Roethlisberger has had to do more with less, and has done very well given what he's been surrounded with (granted, against inferior competition).
All things being equal, I think the deal breaker in the decision is Rivers' odd delivery. The slight wobble in his ball will not fare well in the wicked winds at the Ralph in December. Big Ben has a classic delivery and, body wise, is a bigger, stronger Jim Kelly, and he can run (another thing he does better than Rivers).
Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Rivers, but there's a reason Roeth is higher on every single draft board (I've never seen even one with Rivers ahead of Big Ben).
Unfortunately, unless we trade up, I don't see us ending up with either. But Matt Schaub is not far behind, and I'm not sure that the combination of Schaub and the non-QB impact player we're bound to end up with at 13, wouldn't be just as good as Roeth/Rivers+Non QB second pick at the end of the day anyway.
The thing that people tend to overlook is that there's more than just one solution to this problem. There are probably four or five different scenerios that will make the Bills a much better team on opening day.

If we aren't going to move up for Big Ben, then we should move down (either Minnesota at 19 or New England at 21), where Rivers should still be available. Trade #13 and our 4th rounder for #21 and #32, grab Rivers at #21, trade down from #32 for a second and third, grab J. Grove (Center - Virginia Tech) and Rashun Woods in the second round, a tight end and a corner in the third. If we stay at #13, grab the best WR, then trade up ahead of Green Bay and grab JP Losman.

I think Eli, Big Ben are two of the top 3 picks, Rivers to the Steelers--all gone by pick 13. I used to be big on Losman, but I keep hearing terms like "Coach-killer" and "locker room cancer" associated with him.

Im not saying Big Ben isnt good, but who did he play?? This guy is falling not cuz of ability but because noone knows how good he is playing against top teams. Is he worth 8-10 million to sign?
Ask the chargers how important it is to get a guy who is big with a cannon arm (leaf)?
Again, not saying Ben isnt good, but Im not gonna say he is either. At least Manning and Rivers did more with less against better teams.

I saw him play in a ton of games live because i go to school at Miami (OH).....I've seen him tear apart Marshall and Bowling Green last year when both teams were on the brink of the Top 25. This guy is unbelieveable. If any of you saw the GMAC Bowl against Lousville, it wasn't even a game. Ben threw for over three-hundred yards, three 3 TDs in the first half and the only two passes he missed in the first half were dropped. He's a big time player and is worthy of the big time money

I like both Roethlisberger and Rivers. Rivers being a four year starter, and a damned successful one, means a lot in my book. Still, Big Ben's measurables are intriguing and the few times I saw him on TV he looked straight up nasty.
I'm torn. But I'd be happy with either one of them, to be honest.

i saw it, tivo'd it, watched it 3 times. It was a clinic. And by every account I've ever heard. the kid's attitude and leadership skills are as good as it gets. Hey, Chad Pennington played in that conference and he's already a big-time QB, and I think his best years are ahead of him. Steve McNair played at Alcorn State.

I agree. I just think if Ben falls to, say #7, and you have a chance to make a move to jump ahead of Pittsburgh, you have to make that move. Like you say though, either one holding up a Bills jersey on draft day puts a smile on my face.
