Well. We make the trade to the Browns everyones talking about. Why not pick up "Big Ben?" Physically he has what it takes more than Phillip Rivers does.

Yes Big Ben is more athlectic, but the draft is getting near and the majority of people have Rivers ranked ahead of Big Ben. Rivers may have the quickest release in the qb class and has a knack for finding ways to win. Those are two important attributes for an nfl qb to succeed. But I can live with Big Ben, he's nearly as good.

I have hoped all a long that we could somehow land Big Ben, but as the draft gets closer I am starting to like the idea of Rivers too.

Yeah but Rivers has INCREDIBLE intangibles, which are more important in the NFL than pure physical talent.

What do we really know about River's "INCREDIBLE" intangibles, the guy started four years at a second rate ACC school. He played in a passing attack that stressed the short, underneath game, therein lies his high completion percentage. Don't get me wrong I think the guy is a good QB, but to prop this guy up like the second coming of Jim Kelly is not fair to Rivers if the Bills do take him. Given the Bills recent history of evaluating QB's lets all air on the side of caution, instead of jumping in head first.

Gamble ahead of Hall?
DJ Williams at 12?
Dansby a top 15 pick?
Udeze and Smith out of the top 15?

I think this mock draft needs to be rearranged a bit.

ksl66, the description you gave about Rivers reminds me of the quarterback who plays in my neck of the woods, Tom Brady, who, very unfortunately, has won two of the past three super bowls, something, again unfortunately, Jim Kelly was not able to do in his four attempts. I mocked all of my Patriot friends for being so stupid two years ago for trading Bledsoe to us, but the Pats made the right choice. Brady, even if he is gay, is a winner, and if Rivers is of that same mold, I say grab him.

we would be idiots to take a QB in the 1st round, after millions of cap space cash and a 13th pick what would we have after 3 years? A big fat MAYBE!! grab the best lineman (offense or defense) or defensive starter and we would be betterr off,
Besides Peyton name another great 1st round qb

How is this for a double standard. Not only does this thread belong in the War Room but it deserves to be in the Spam section.

How can you enforce standards when you don't adhere to them yourself.??

The patriots are winners because they have no holes, tons of depth and great coaching....brady has a moderate amount to do with it. And yes, he DOES have a penchant for the sausage. :littleguy:

There's no way TD takes Rivers if Udeze, Hall, Will Smith, and Reggie Williams are all still on the board.

If Rivers ends up being the pick it'll make or break TD's career in Buffalo.

Rivers will command a large signing bonus and it'll force the team to make him the QB of the future. You can't afford two high priced QB's on your roster (like Flutie and Johnson were at one time). Bledsoe will not be the QB after this year if Rivers is drafted, regardless of how well either of them play. There are questions on Rivers' arm strength. He played in an unconventional offense. He's not a can't miss prospect.

On the other hand, he does seem to have the kind of intangibles that championship winning QB's have. He did very well in the Senior Bowl. I'm sure that if he is drafted #1 by the Bills he will have been looked at very closely by all the scouting people and the offensive coaching staff. Taking Rivers will show that TD will do whatever it takes to build a championship team, even if it means he made a mistake in trading for Bledsoe.

I could go either way on whether to take Rivers or not. I only care that TD gets it right.

some well needed objectivity... great post...

The only thing I disagree with is that DB would only have 1 yr left if Rivers is drafted. The very real possibility still exists of restructuring DB's contract, also the length of River’s potential contract could make the first 2-3 seasons reasonable under the cap. The rookie cap still applies, though I’m not sure how much a 13 pick will require. Essentially, the safe pick for TD would be a WR or DE, signaling that he believes this team is very capable of winning now, of making the playoffs this season, not in three years when Rivers is ready. Taking Rivers would not necessarily dictate that trading for DB was the wrong move, only that he is looking past DB’s tenure for the formation of a championship team. I would obviously rather win the Super Bowl sooner rather than later, but the important thing is that we win it, and that starts with this upcoming draft. Let’s all hope TD gets it right, regardless of what we think the Bills should do…

Interesting mock draft. I can't see the Bills taking Rivers there but who knows?

I like Rivers but to say he is better than Roeth seems a stretch. To compare him to Brady is also a stretch since Brady played at Michigan in big time pressure. Rivers has yet to see that kind of situation.

This seems like another hype rollercoaster like with Mike Williams or Fitzgerald. After the storm passes, the elite players usually come back on top (i.e. Roy Williams).

Rivers would command no more money than anybody else we pick at 13.

To the point that drafting a QB at position 13 would command a high signing bonus and salary:

What do you think any other player picked at 13 will command? There is not a significant "positional" discount for draft picks. The salaries of drafties are pretty much "slotted" by position within the round drafted. In other words, a Guard or Safety drafted at pick 13 will make roughly the same on their first contract as a QB picked at 13.

I won't disagree that in subsequent contracts, a QB comparable in ability to most other positions will make more money, but for initial contracts, I don't think that there is much difference.
