Why are so many of you enamoured, dare I say OBSESSED with drafting a glamour positon (WR, QB) Games are won and lost in the trenches. I say that we should draft OL and DL. These are the positions where the game is won!

i always look at it this way:
if i was going to build a franchise id start w/ the o line first
you can have all the talent in the world at the "glamour positions" but if your only as good as your o line allows you to be then your just wasting that talent

Good QB's and WR's and RB's can make a bad OL look good, and a Good OL can make bad QB's, WR's, and RB's look good.
Its easier to get a solid OL then it is to get Good QB, WR, and RB. The Thing is that I think the Bills have a Good WR and RB, all they need is a good QB.

If you draft a WR or a QB you can pay them as a drafted rookie. If you go in free agency you will pay a hell of a lot more than you would for an OL or DL. I say that most of the time.

WRONG!!!! IMO everything that you said is baloney. Good QB's and WR's look terrible with a bad OL. FACT! You have got it bass ackwards.
The NFC RULED the SB in the late 80's and 90's because they dominated the line of scrimmage. Meanwhile, we had Boomer, Kelly, Reed, Elway and numerous other stars in our finesse systems and we got killed in the Super Bowl, year after year after year. It was WELL ESTABLISHED that the NFC teams had a strong tendency to stockpile high draft on both sides of the line, Then, when playing the AFC finesse teams, they just blew us off the ball. Look at what 2 teams played this year? Both had dominant high draft pick DL's.
How many stud receivers played in the SB? And a 6th round pick and free agent as QB's!

The Only thing I can say is HUH!!??
If im not mistaken, The Bills had one of the Biggest and best OL's in football when they were in the superbowl.
I said a good QB, WR, and RB CAN make a bad OL look good. And a good OL CAN make a bad QB, WR, RB look good.
My fellow Poster, the Bills OL wasnt half as bad as they looked. You cant block 6 players with 5 or 7 players with 6. It aint happening. JUST GET RID OF THE BALL DREW!!!

Actually 74, your qoute falls right into my point. The Bills offense was great mainly because of the OL. nevertheless, the NFC's DL was usually better than our OL, hence so many blowouts. Ever watch Jim Kelly play when he was running for his life? It was ugly.

the lines are the key to a succesful football team, that is football 101.
People are obsessed with skill position players because most of their football "knowledge" comes from watching sportscenter. They think if we had this guy or that their would be a quick fix, even though it takes a whole team to win.

You guys are right about OL. If you have a good OL your chances of winning go up alot.
I am a huge fan of power offenses and strong defense. I want to have a team that runs the ball down the throat of other Defenses. I want a Defense that just destroys offenses.
I think we have that Defense and that Offense. I think this OL is one of the best run blocking lines in the NFL. When you put this OL in the best situation to succeed, they will. Just like other OL's in the NFL.
If Drew Bledsoe comes out and says he needs to let Henry and McGahee win games and not his arm then I will be fine with him. If he comes out and says Im taking a pay cut of atleast 2 million( I want a pay cut of 3 million) than I will be fine with him.
If this team runs the Ball more than 30 times a game they will win. I dont care if we are trailing 14-0, we still have to be a run first team.
Jennings, Brown, TT, and WIlliams can run Block. If you make them pass block, especially for Bledsoe then we are asking for trouble.
I have no problem keeping Bledsoe if he Takes a pay cut and a cut in his role in this offense. He needs to let Henry, Moulds, McGahee, Reed, and whoever else comes in make plays

i always use this scenario to prove that the o- line is more important than anything
the season the redskins won the championship over the bills
mark rypien was sacked 9 times all season , when in previous seasons the skins averaged like 30 something sacks
i think we all remember how dominating the skins were on offense that yr

Thats what I have been saying, but the thing we dont agree about is the reality that Bledsoe will do that.
I just dont think its in him to rely on anything other than his arm.
But we will see. I hope that I am very wrong. Im a Bills fan, not a individual players fan. Thats only for college, except I am a Michigan fan.
It just so Happens that I became a fan Of McGahee while I watched him in college, and My favorite player in College, when he played, was Henson.

I know O-lineman are important, but what would you rather see- a 70 yard TD from Bledsoe to Moulds or a good block by an O-lineman?

there is no 70 yd touchdown without protection for the QB.

And how does Moulds get down the field for the first 40-50 yards to score that TD? Does he run a 3.17 fourty?

I believe we were 4-0 in the regular seasons against the NFC in most of our SB years, except of course for the big one...

I got mixed up with the topic. I thought you were talking excitement, not importance. A good O line can help cover up weaknesses on the rest of the offense.

Vernon Carey scares me b/c he has weight issues. That is why I am "obsessed" with drafting someoene else in round one, are you happy now?
LeCharles Bentley was a 2nd rounder and he's OK.

What about Udeze or Will Smith on the D side of the ball? Do you like them as a first choice?

I just have one question, when was the last time the Bills have spent a #1 pick on a glamour position?
Besides Willis
Yep, it was 1997 on Antwain Smith. The Year Before that was Eric Moulds. Thats it folks. The next Glamour position taken in the 1st round was back in the 80's if you dont count Rob Johnson or Drew Bledsoe as a 1st round pick, thats only 2 in a long period of time.
This team needs Playmakers. You get playmakers in the first.
Pro Bowl QB's 4 1st rounders out of 6
McNair
Culpepper
Manning
McNabb
Farve
Green

Your postings about Bledsoe are making me rethink my position. But I still think we need to give Drew 2 games to prove himself under Mike, Tom, and Sam

What I don't want to see is Moulds beating his man and flying down the sideline, with the safety without a line on him AND Blesoe flat on his back because there was a lousey look out block. Note that the block happens BEFORE the ball is passed. Get first things first:rocky:

Absolutely right on 1968. If I remember, the '90 NY Giants beat us with a 40 year old RB, Mark Ingram and Co. at WR, and a great OL.
And didn't Washington beat us with with Mark Rypien, Earnest Byner, old Art Monk and Co., and a great OL?
Offensive line first, defensive line second.
