I would like to know how many people on the PR&S forum like hip hop music.
If you could post the song of the rap artist you have in mind please do so.
PS It is very important that you respond. So please try.
PSS If you HATE hip hop please post why you think it is crap.

When I think of hip hop, the first two songs that come to mind...
Single MC: Biggie Smalls, "Juicy"
Group: Wu-Tang Clan, "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuttin' ta **** Wit"
But there's so many more songs/artists that are great, it's incredible. Hard to do in just one artist or song.

I don't like it at all
1. b/c i'm not very cool
2. b/c i can't sing along with it very well
3. b/c i don't like hip hop lyrics in general
4. b/c i have very specific taste in music
5. b/c i don't listen to it (if i listened to it enough i'm sure i'd acquire a taste for it, to some degree)

The hip hop I have heard seems to be about sex (but in a way I don't findn romantic) and murder
But that understandable since my favorite kinds of lyrics are Christian based or story-songs (country)...but I also like romantic songs.

I am not a fan of the genre either. Perhaps I am too old and set in my ways. Some of the lyrics I can't stand, so I use my right to not listen to them. Like Matt, if I did listen to it, I would probably start to like it.

Wu-Tang...the guys I hung out with just got loved their style. We all got into old martial arts movies from that group.
Biggie just flowed. Nasty. Plus you gotta respect a guy who looked like Jabba the Hut and could still get that much love from the ladies.
Mood songs:
Fight: all time greatest - "Hit 'em Up" by 2pac, also "Patiently Waiting" by 50 Cent and "No Tears" by Scarface...oh and "Small World" by Nas
Sex: "****in' You Tonight" by Biggie and R. Kelly, various others but I like soul and R&B music better for that
Party: whatever it is, it's gotta be new. Outkast is always a good choice.
Lines:
The first verse of "Hail Mary," 2pac
From Patiently Waiting:
"You shouldn't throw stones
If you live in a glass house
And if you got a glass jaw
You should watch your mouth
Cause I'll break your face
Have you ass runnin'
Mumbling to the jake"
from "Brooklyn's Finest," one of Jay-Z's verses:
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, for nine six, the only MC with a flu
Yeah I rhyme sick, I be what your tryin' to do
Made a fortune off Peru, extradite, china white heroin
***** please, like short sleeves I bear arms
Stay out the way from heroin."
plus many, many more...

I guess if it puts me in any mood it would be arrogance, when i listen to rap, i think im better them most people... There’s a lot of truth in rap :)
For most rap, i don't listen to it for inspiration or anything. Just listen to it bacuse of the way it sounds. I like the beats alot. But there are lyrics i like.
Here are some examples.
Eminem - We as Americans...
I got a secret if you can keep it between us
I tuck two Nina's under my jeans either side of my penis
under my Long Johns
under my Sean Johns
when running with the long arm or the long long gone
Im'a do five years no less than that
no questions asked
it might be a good idea to stop right here
and quit while I'm ahead
already in the red
already got a steady infrared meant on my head
A target on my back
bigger problems than that
Bin Laden on my ass
he probly gone send a task
I ain't gone even ask
T.I. - No more Talk
I'm either running for my life or I'm just waiting to die
I'm the supplier of the fire if you're chasing a high
It's never, when or why, it's the way that he die
Did he stand like a man till the day that he die
Or was he reaching for guns or trying to run
Or was he outside on the lawn in front of his son
And if ya, running your mouth you can die in the slum
Cuz in the, south where I'm from they dying for crumbs
You can die for your Patna's or die for ya moms
Or you could die cuz your ***** just heard the alarm, just stealing
Or die in a plane they say it's a bomb
When they run it into a tower, they just say it's Saddam
Screaming Allah the moment that it's hitting the building
With total disregard for all men women and children
See *****z get killed when, people mix they money with feelings
I'm filling my money up in the wall some in the ceiling
I'm just one of the millions of *****z who ?
It's a war going on and they killing for nothing
We were in denial all awhile they where flicking the buttons
I'd rather be dying for something instead of living for nothing
End of discussion

This is eminem at his best...
Since I'm in a position to talk to these kids and they listen
I ain't no politician but I'll kick it with 'em a minute
Cause see they call me a menace; and if the shoe fits I'll wear it
But if it don't, then y'all'll swallow the truth grin and bear it
Now who's these king of these rude ludicrous lucrative lyrics
Who could inherit the title, put the youth in hysterics
usin his music to steer it sharin his views in his merrits
But there's a huge interference - they're sayin you shouldn't hear it
Maybe it's hatred I spew, maybe it's food for the spirit
Maybe it's beautiful music I made for you to just cherish
But I'm debated disputed hated and viewed in America
as a mother****in drug addict - like you didn't experiment?
Now now, that's when you start to stare at who's in the mirror
and see yourself as a kid again, and you get embarrased
And I got nothin to do but make you look stupid as parents
You ****in do-gooders - too bad you couldn't do good at marriage!
(Ha ha!) And do you have any clue what I had to do to get here I don't
think you do so stay tuned and keep your ears glued to the stereo
Cause here we go - he's {*Jigga joint Jigga-chk-Jigga*}
And I'm the sinister, Mr. Kiss-My-Ass it's just the Renegade
See I'm a poet to some, a regular modern day Shakespeare
Jesus Christ the King of these Latter Day Saints here
To shatter the picture in which of that as they paint me
as a monger of hate and Satan a scatter-brained atheist
But that ain't the case, see it's a matter of taste
We as a people decide if Shady's as bad as they say he is
Or is he the latter - a gateway to escape?
Media scapegoat, who they can be mad at today
See it's easy as cake, simple as whistlin Dixie
while I'm wavin the pistol at sixty Christians against me
Go to war with the Mormons, take a bath with the Catholics
in holy water - no wonder they try to hold me under longer
I'm a mother****in spiteful, DELIGHTFUL eyeful
The new Ice Cube - mother****ers HATE to like you
What did I do? (huh?) I'm just a kid from the gutter
makin this butter off these bloodsuckers, cause I'm a muh ****in Renegade

Rap music is for people that have far too much self esteem.
Most of it is self-hype, self-glorification, and inflating success with female partners.
And 99% of the time its listeners are pathetic losers that should have a low self image.

The Geto Boyz used to **** guys like Ice Cube in prison.
Geto Boys - Still
(Scarface) Still.....kill.. X2
(Willie D)
Back up in your ass with the Resurrection
Is the group harder than an erection
That shows no affection
They wanna ban us on Capital Hill
Cause its die mutha*****as, die mutha*****as still fool
(Bushwick Bill)
All along [still] it was the geto, nothing but the geto
Takin short steps one foot at a time and keep my head low
And never let go
cause if I let go, then I'll be spineless
I'm goin' INSANE!
(Scarface)
I think my mind just goes outta control
And judge your subjects mutha*****as read about
I touch on the ***** that they be leavin' out
I seen this mutha*****a's .9 smokin'
I seen the same n*gga with the .9 die with his eyes open
And simply what this means is
He didn't know that every dog had his day
Until he seen his
I bet you mutha*****as will too
Because its die mutha*****a, die mutha*****a still fool
(chorus) X4
(Scarface) Die mutha*****as, die mutha*****as still fool
(Willie D) Die mutha*****as, die mutha*****as still
[I think it's something in the water man, it's just
gotta be in the water]
(Bushwick Bill)
Awwww *****! Chuck's on a killing spree again
With guillotines for men
I walk around town with a frown on my face
***** the whole world, fixin' to catch a murder case
The murder rate
(Scarface)
May increase if your caught up in the world
While it's dyin', I guarentee your fryin' cause I am
On the verge of knockin' mutha*****as out for no reason
Once I get down there'll be no breathin' it seems when
Mutha*****as wanna calm down, put his palm down
Seems I gots to lay the law down
Now its on pow what you to do? I'm askin' you
(Willie D)
Step to face I'll break your ass in two, bastard you
Rather swim in some *****in' hot tar
Before you ***** wit Willie D cause what I got for
Your ass will make ya ***** your meal
Cause it's die mutha*****as, die mutha*****as still fool
Chorus X4
(Scarface)
How many n*ggas brought they irons tonight? [Tell me]
How many n*ggas wanna ride tonight? [I do]
Pick out our victims when the time is right
We get they ass up off the corner cause they dyin' tonight
(Willie D)
N*ggas be all up in my mug
But it's a different story when them mutha*****as coughing up blood
[When he died, looking in his eyes, was he as he cried]
I bust another cap in his ass and he died, time is 5
(Bushwick Bill)
N*ggas be shootin' the gif like they for real
But when it jumps, they ain't got no murder skills
So Bill just, chops 'em down, watch 'em fall
And cut they ass head to toe, jaw to jaw
(Willie D)
But I'ma make your bitch ass holla
Cause I'ma put a hole in your head
The size of a half a dolla
[***** around and get your cap peeled cause this is]
Die mutha*****a, die mutha*****a [kill]
Chorus X4

The Predator is my fave Cube album. "Today Was A Good Day," and "Check Yoself" with Das EFX. Cube is an actor now anyways. It was always his voice (and to a lesser extent his lyrics) that made him sound tough, rather than his actual street cred.
Bill was a midget. I'm pretty sure he's dead.
"My Mind's Playin' Tricks On Me" is probably my favorite too, Chimp.
Haven't mentioned Snoop, Dre, Warren G and Nate Dogg, or a bunch of others. Thegame's got good taste. Memphis Bleek, Cam'ron, etc. Eminem is very good but overrated IMO. 50's got the look, the voice, the cred...if he keeps it up, they'll talk about him like they talk about Pac now.

I know your stance on religion, but AMEN!!!!
There are only about three or four hip hop/ cRAP groups that I can even stand to listen to.
1. GRITZ
2. JAYZEE- foul yes, artistic somewhat
3. Missy Elliot- I hate her what she tries to call music but her videos because of her brilliant color schemes such as having all orange on a blue backround etc. are an artistic masterpiece.
Truth be told, I have never gotten into rap because I find the vast majority of it to be mindless drivel that attempts to out cuss drunken sailors. IMHO it is nothing but pure recycled garbage and it does nothing but pound home variations of the following five points.
1. Women are bitches and hoes
2. Give me my ****ing drugs 'fo I put a cap in yo ass
3. When ya done ****in a bitch put a cap in her ass
4. Don't take responsibility for your actions blame somebody else
5. I'm better than everyone else and when I **** up its somebody else's fault.
(I know that this list is full of TOS violations and I'm sorry but its sadly true)
Quite frankly these ideas and the lack of originality in style or content make me violently ill. What is more frightening is that some of the kids who listen to this can quote tupac and EMINEM word for word but you ask them to quote even one line of the Declaration of Independence, or Poe, or Hughes, or recite the I Have a Dream Speech, or explain the role of Edison, Einstein, Drew, McCoy and they won't know what you are talking about. A study I say a couple of years ago clearly shows that there is a definite possibility that listening to cRAP can make you both dumber and violent. If I've offended anybody I'm not sorry and if my fellow mods in their better judgement decide to ban me well maybe I should be but I want nothing to do with the world of HIP HOP. I'll take the great tradition of Black Music- Blues, Jazz, Big Band, some R&B, Raggae(sp) but HIP HOP- Hell No. Send that back to the infernal region from which Satan sprouted it from.

TheCrystalBall

don't like hip hop at all. Most of it does not send a positive message to the kids.
Ive never understood this line of reasoning.
A lot of hip hop artists start their own record labels. They produce their own beats and write their own lyrics.
In fact, having an independant label and sound is the new rage in hip hop.
You say it does not send a positive message yet hip hop teaches kids to be entrepreneurs. If you listened to hip hop you'd realize that is the primary message. To be independent.
When someone says hip hop is all about "the wrong things" I have to ponder if there is a double standard.
Hollywood writers who specialize in the 'visual' are commended for their accurate portrayals of a certain cultures history for example, Braveheart. A violent epic about rebellion.
Hip hop artists specialize in the 'audio'. Yet when they portray an accurate portrayal of their violent rebellious culture they are demeaned as deplorable human beings.
When Braveheart wins awards, it is an example to young aspiring writers. When Hip hop artists suceed, its young aspiring artists are scapegoated. They are 'whats wrong' with kids today.
I want to know why this is? Why is it that hip hop's message, which is just as violent as visual artistry, is lost?
Why dont the majority of people in America point to hip hop as an example of entrepreneurship and not as an example of moral decay?

I am not saying its not influential, I'm pretty sure that in the 1920's-1940's Nazism was very influentual in Germany, Attila the Hun was very influential to the Romans and hip hop will have the same effect. It will destroy American culture and help to crush cultural stimulus among our youth. I am pretty sure that thirty years from now when this generation is in its 50's and 60's it will say the same thing that the listeners of sitar music said in the 1960's- boy what a crock of crap- that is what they will say. yes but they never conducted open violence and degredation of women and society. as for the thing that I said about the study showing that rap did lower intellegence- well my friend I would be happy to post the link. Thus if its a lie I have evidence from it both from my freshman year roommate who dropped out after one year with a pitiful GPA. I can think of other examples as well. Its nice to see that the mayor of Detroit is doing such a great job, but seriously can you find one person that dreams of going to Detroit- except of course for Motown which I thoroughly enjoy- for its high standard of living? Song: Used To Love Her Lyrics
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I had to put her
Six feet under
And I can still hear her complain
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I knew I miss her
So I had to keep her
She's buried right in my back yard
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
She bitched so much
She drove me nuts
And now I'm happier this way
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I used to love her, but I had to kill her
I had to put her
Six feet under
And I can still hear her complain

Oh now don't get me wrong chimpy I think that hip hop is loaded with entrepreneurship as is the entire music industry. I just want to know how it is creative. At one time the mid 1980's to early 1990's it was creative but it is now just a bunch of recycled sounds and when it comes to style in videos its mostly sex object females, but I will give you this Missy Elliot does have some great videos for she hasn't forgotten the artform aspect and her use of color contrast is pure gold. Most of it though IMHO lacks taste. Motown was a type of style but they didn't have to use profanity to get their poin't across and nor did the greats of Jazz and Blues. What I'm trying to say is EMINEM sounds exactly like snoop dog and well there is nothing but stagnation in that artform.

People Who Died
By Jim Carroll
Audio sample
Teddy sniffing glue he was 12 years old
Fell from the roof on East Two-nine
Cathy was 11 when she pulled the plug
On 26 reds and a bottle of wine
Bobby got leukemia, 14 years old
He looked like 65 when he died
He was a friend of mine
Refrain:
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died
G-berg and Georgie let their gimmicks go rotten
So they died of hepatitis in upper Manhattan
Sly in Vietnam took a bullet in the head
Bobby OD'd on Drano on the night that he was wed
They were two more friends of mine
Two more friends that died / I miss 'em--they died
Repeat Refrain
Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room
Bobby hung himself from a cell in the tombs
Judy jumped in front of a subway train
Eddie got slit in the jugular vein
And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others,
And I salute you brother/ This song is for you my brother
Repeat Refrain
Herbie pushed Tony from the Boys' Club roof
Tony thought that his rage was just some goof
But Herbie sure gave Tony some bitchen proof
"Hey," Herbie said, "Tony, can you fly?"
But Tony couldn't fly . . . Tony died
Repeat Refrain:
Brian got busted on a narco rap
He beat the rap by rattin' on some bikers
He said, hey, I know it's dangerous,
but it sure beats Riker's
But the next day he got offed
by the very same bikers
Repeat Refrain; repeat song to Eddie

That's sort of the point. You don't have to like it. But why make stuff up to justify it?

32-20 Blues - Robert Johnson
If I send for my baby
and she don't come
If I send for my baby

All the doctors in Hot Springs

And if she gets unruly
thinks she don't wan do
If she gets unruly

Take my 32-20 now and
cut her half in two
She got a 38 special but I believe its much too light
She got a 38 special but I believe its much too light
I got a 32-20, got to make the camps alright
If I send for my baby
and she don't come
If I send for my baby

All the doctors in Hot Springs

I'm gonna shoot my pistol, gonna shoot my Gatlin gun
I'm gonna shoot my pistol, gotta shoot my Gatlin gun
You made me love you

One good thing about rap music is that most people grow out of it after high school. At least with myself and many people I know.
I still appreciate a good song here and there, but I sure as hell don't have it playing on my radio 24/7 like I used to.

Looks like chimp and Henry know their stuff. Im soon to be 33 and grew up on rap/hip-hop. I do not listen to it daily as my tastes run from Sinatra to country and everything in between. I guess if youre asking what I enjoy when it comes to rap/hip-hop........
Public Enemy....in my mind nobody comes close from "My uzi weighs a ton" to "cold lampin with flavor", "Shut em down", "Fight the Power" and even toss in "Bring the Noise" featuring Anthrax. They were loud, angry, had a message. You could not help but like them.
Eminem.....Every lyric of his has somthing to say, a point to get across, brought to you in a creative way. What is not to like.
De La Soul.....very creative and adventerous, who wouldve thought about mixing in a bit of hippie into hip-hop.
Run DMC......They started it all
NWA....If you didnt like them like I did, you straight out hated them. When they split, most went on to be successfull solo.

There is great music to be heard in any genre. Hip Hop included. What is detestable is not the music (unless it's coming from some punks 12"subs in an adjacent car...), but the hip hop culture. The talk, the walk etc.
Kids aspiring to and emulating ghetto trash on such a large scale is a serious symptom.

Another very good point. To apprecciate the music is one thing, but for a white kid to aspire to use ebonics and wear pants with the waistline past his a**checks is not acceptable.

roflmao, good point.
Personally I don't like the majority of hip-hop but I am still a big fan. Eminem's early stuff was weak, but now he's on fire. I am not into G-Unit that much but I like 50. Outkast is sweet, I like them b/c they are weird and do their own thing. Tupac is King. Ja Rule is a flake. Not a big fan of Jay-Z.... Overall it's probably my favotrite. I can't stand the whole "Ye-aah, Ye-ah, Ye-ah" crap that you hear a lot though.... (in interviews)

I never understood this either. Everyone uses ebonics now...for example the term 'old skool' is everywhere.
Another thing...realize how tight pants were in the 60's, 70's and somewhat in the 80's. Loose clothing is mainstream now...not to mention wearing jersies.

Once in a while I'll buy a hip hop album but it has to be good like the Outkast album last year. Oh, I've got damn near every Wu-Tang album out there, including some underground stuff. I've got a version of "Freeway" that blazes.
Cuban Lynx is great. Chef Raekwon's awesome. Best of the single albums with a nod to Ol' Dirty's Return to the 36 Chamberz, but that's just because I think Dirty is a riot. Gza's probably my other favorite...Liquid Swords is tight.
To me, though, 36 Chamberz and Wu-Tang Forever are just as good.

Even though I wasnt around then, I have to say that hip hop from 1993-1998 was absolutley amazing. Those were the glory years of hip hop. Not that todays stuff isnt any good.
Im just saying that BIG stars were coming out at that time. Snoop, too short, Ice cube was solo, Scarface, started going solo, wu-tang, cypress hill, outkast, 2pac, biggie, Nas, mac mall, Big Pun, beatnutz, puffy, mase (Remember Mace? That guy could flow like mad. After he got shot he became a priest or something like that...lol. I am also a believer that puffy TRIED to rip off Mase's style. Notice how puffy kind of raps like him but fails miserably). Im sure there are other artists i forgot to mention. Either way that era is to hip hop what the 60's were to rock and roll.

I'm very late getting into this one, but I must say that rap is my favorite form of music. In 1992, at the age of 8 I walked into Record Theatre and bought a tape of The Chronic by Dr. Dre. I thought that they wouldn't sell it to me, but they did. From the time I was 7, I followed the genre. I didn't know anything about the life that lyracists talked about, certainly not what West Coast rappers like Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Ice T, Snoop Dogg, Warren G or Tupac Shakur but my entry into this world of music, style, attitude and taste was advanced by my two best friends through grade school, both of whom came from the East Side of Buffalo and got me into the culture of the rap game. I knew them for about 7 years, I went to school with them at a private school called Christian Central Academy in Williamsville.
Both of my best friends were black, which served as a dividing force in my family (largely racist WASP type), but I was better off having the experience because I think it helped me to avoid racist tendencies altogether. As we got older, I learned more and more about the culture of hip hop. I remember during Middle School that all I listened to was rap, the only people I really spent time with were my black friends, and it was a confusing time. I am not black. I don't live in the inner city as my friends did. I questioned the connection I had to this lifestyle... was there any way to relate to how I lived to how life was portrayed by a lyracist? Did I really understand my friends, by now I had 5 or 6 who came from backgrounds unlike my own.
I grew into this style, this way of life. Not the criminal or ultra violent nature that so many stereotype the rap culture as, but the one that talks about being a man, standing up for yourself, challanging injustice and trying to escape the path that your parents took, trying to make a future for yourself. I come from a broken home, both my parents made nothing of their lives. Even though my friends at the time didn't enjoy the creature comforts I did, I looked to their strong family core to become part of my support system. I learned from my friends, not just a love of rap music or of a certain lifestyle, but I also learned what it meant to be a part of that lifestyle. I find that so many misunderstand it today, not just older people but even people my age, who confuse a glamorous entertainment based stereotype with the true roots of this movement. Listen to a lyracist like Talib Kweli, GZA, Jay Z, Big L or Tupac Shakur, really listen. I make no apologies to my family or friends now who don't like my taste in music or lifestyle. Its real. Don't get it twisted.
