Senators approach Ray about returning

Could Rob Ray be the answer to the Ottawa Senators' search for more toughness?

It's certainly a possibility.

TSN has learned that Senators' general manager John Muckler has in the last 48 hours -- in the wake of his team being physically manhandled and beaten 5-1 by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday -- contacted Ray to inquire about the possiblity of the out of work NHL tough guy returning to play in Ottawa for the Senators.

Sources told TSN that Muckler did not make a firm offer to Ray but that the Senators' GM would get back to him to let him know if the team would make him a contract offer.

"I have no comment on that," Muckler said when contacted by TSN. "We are looking at several options and we will continue to look at our options."

Ray played only five games for the Senators last spring after being traded for future considerations from the Buffalo Sabre last March 10. He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

In 14 seasons with the Sabres, including the five games he played with Ottawa, the 35-year-old racked up 3,193 penalty minutes.

Ray is now living in the Buffalo area. He's doing construction work by day, re-modelling homes, but has continued to skate and play some hockey in the area. Ray is also doing some radio and television work in Buffalo on Sabre broadcasts.

Sources say Ray would love nothing more than to return to NHL action and is eagerly awaiting any further word from the Senators on possible employment.

I don't know if Ray would be the answer for the toughness at this phase. He's been out for awhile, and he was certainly not a dominating force as he once was.

What does that mean Wally? I'd drop Boulton and Peters to get Ray back in a second.
