Check out the draft pick trade value calculator on this web-site. From the looks of things we could trade down from #13 package in our third rounder #77 and pick-up #18 and 2nd round #50.
How's this scenario. Before anyone rants and raves I know McGahee is an unproven commodity. Relax, this is just to stimulate some war room discussion..
Trade Henry to Washington or Detroit for their 5th or 6th overall pick. Could it happen..?? Maybe to both the possibility of the trade and the possibility that the interested teams would bite...
Draft Sean Taylor with that choice #5 or #6.
Trade down in the first for the picks shown above.
Now we have two 2nd round picks, #45 and #50. Package the two second rounders (check the draft pick value indicator for point allocation) for #21 overall.
Draft P. Rivers #18
Draft someone of the caliber of Snee, Jenkins, Hall, or W. Smith at #21.
Now we do not choose until the 4th round but essentially we have Sean Taylor, Philip Rivers, and D'Angelo Hall (or someone to his effect). Staying at 13 enables us to get none of these three players as Hall and Rivers are not good enough value at 13 and Taylor will be long gone. This move also enables us to say goodbye to Winfield and solidifies our D for a long, long, time...
DE Schobel
DT Adams
DT Williams
DE FREE AGENT
LB Spikes
LB Fletcher
LB Posey
S Milloy
S Taylor
CB Hall
CB Clements
The offensive side is enriched by Rivers playing a year under Drew. We can also potentially address OG and WR in free agency as the club is 9 million or so under the cap and Winfield's big chunk of salary will not be needed. Sign the draft picks and there will be plenty of cash for the free agent DE mentioned above, plus a guard and a wide receiver.
3 key draft picks
3 key free agent signings.
One huge loss in Henry which may or may not be felt materially given McGahee's improvement. And this is all contingent upon the Bills' feeling confident with McGahee as the feature back. There are still 3 more months of tests, rehab, strengthing that McGahee will go through before the draft to further solidify (or diminish) TD's optimism in him. We shall see....
In any event, check out the draft value calculator. It gives some simple insight into the maneuverability, or lack thereof, of draft picks.
