There is a hole in the boards so they are ending the first period a little early

Did they actually run time off the clock?

They just tacked the remaining time in the first period to the beginning of the second. Then when the first period ends, they just go back to center ice and drop the puck for the 2nd.

Sometimes they do that if things get too out of hand...Like a brawl with 30 seconds left in the period....Sometimes officials will just end the period to help get everyone off the ice and into the locker room to calm everyone down.

They did that once back in the days of the aud, there was like 6 mins left in the period and they just added it on to the next period and started the intermission early.

I have seen the period end early multiple times. I don't recall ever seeing the boards punctured like that.
