Jalen Rose close to joining Raptors

Report: Rose close to joining Raptors
NEW YORK (AP) - The Chicago Bulls and Toronto Raptors were involved in serious trade discussions Friday for a deal that would include Jalen Rose, Antonio Davis and others, The Associated Press learned.

Other players whose names have come up in the talks include Alvin Williams, Jerome Williams and Morris Peterson of the Raptors and Eddie Robinson and Donyell Marshall of the Bulls, according to a source close to one of the players who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Jalen Rose was in the starting lineup Friday night as the Bulls faced the Los Angeles Lakers.

The teams planned to speak again Saturday, the source said, and were likely to focus on a two-for-two deal. Rose, however, said he had been assured by Bulls vice-president John Paxson that he would not be dealt to Toronto.

"It's blown up and become the kind of item that everybody that I know is calling me about," Rose said prior to Chicago's game against the Lakers. "People that I know in L.A. feel like they're coming to see my last game as a Bull.

"If it does happen, that means he went back on his word," Rose said. "I see him as somebody that's a man of his word and I have no reason to believe otherwise."

The trade rumour spread quickly Friday, with Rose and several players from both teams getting numerous calls on their cell phones. Paxson and Raptors general manager Glen Grunwald did not immediately return messages.

"Is it going to go down?" Toronto's Vince Carter asked outside the team's Manhattan hotel.

Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said he talked to Rose about the rumours and told him: "Don't you dare get distracted with any of this garbage that's going on."

Chicago has been rumoured to have been shopping Rose, a small forward in his 10th NBA season. Rose, averaging a team-high 15.3 points but shooting only 39 per cent from the field, briefly lost his spot in the starting lineup earlier this season.

"I've never said that I wanted to play for another team. I'm not saying that now," said Rose, adding that he doesn't believe anyone in the Chicago organization wants him gone.

"I'd be lying to say I didn't think about it, I didn't analyze it, I didn't think about their roster, I didn't look at their schedule," he said about Toronto. "I just hope it's not an even bigger distraction, not only to the teammates, but to my fans. I got a ton of fans in Chicago that embraced me from day one."

Marshall said he didn't receive a call from Paxson and didn't know anything about a possible deal.

Davis, in his 11th season, has said that he would not mind being traded from Toronto. He is averaging just 7.7 points for the offensively inept Raptors, who are scoring only 77.5 points - the lowest in the league.

"The first thing I heard about that rumour was when I landed," said Toronto coach Kevin O'Neill, whose team arrived Friday evening for a Saturday afternoon game in New Jersey against the Nets.

Jerome Williams, a reserve forward for the Raptors and a fan favourite in Toronto, said he had been hearing the rumour all day but was hoping he would not be included.

"I live for the city of Toronto," said Williams, whose role has been reduced with the arrival of first-round draft pick Chris Bosh. "I heard a few things, but I assume it's just rumours."

I could see sending Antonio Davis and Mopete, but I would like to see Alvin & Jerome Williams stay with the Raptors

It seems like the Raptors are giving up a bit to much for a guy the Bulls want out of Chicago. But it seems like a good move for the Raptors to get him if they were not giving up so much.

If this was 3 years ago Id like it, but not now. The Raptors would be better off trying to get the AD for Jamison and Delk deal done.

Davis appears to want to play elsewhere ( or maybe it's his wife), but I would trade Davis straight up for Jamison in a flash.

Throw in Alvin Williams and the Raptors would look good with Steve Nash.

Rose has really dissapointed in Chicago, but could become a solid complimentary force in Toronto.

Rose's salary is bigger than Davis. Rose ain't worth it. Who the heck is gonna play inside for the Raps when Davis and Jerome are both gone? Donyell Marshall? Puh-leeze. Grunwald better not pull the trigger on this stinky deal. I say get rid of Lamond for a decent point guard and Raps should make it to the playoffs.

Good to see Rose come to the Raptors, but I hate to see Jerome Williams leave the team. Davis - good ridance to a guy who is up when everything is going well, but whines continuously otherwise.

All three playersl have looked good in the two games they have pleyed, especially Marshall who has averaged 20 points a game and was a big part of the rap making 17 3-pont shots against boston. Baxter works hard on the boards and hustles on each play. Rose has not been to make his shots by his passing skills have been to get his teammates open for shots. Carter not doesn't have to do all of the scoring and he averaging 10 plus assists in two games.

Before the trade the the raptors games were boring avergin the least amount of points in the league and now with the trade the have become a explosive run and gun team. It has been great hopefully more game are ahead like the ones we have seen in the past two games.

JYD still Raptor at heart
Toronto Star - Dec 5

Philadelphia:

Jerome Williams used his jersey to wipe the sweat off his face and there, peeping over the waistband of his black Bulls practice shorts, was an unmistakable, vivid strip of purple.

Raptor purple. Williams was traded, tossed from the fold, told he was expendable and yet he still wears his Raptor shorts under his new Chicago Bulls uniform.

"Oh yeah," a wistful Williams grinned, pulling up the hem to show off the dinosaur logo on the left leg of his Raptor shorts.

"That's my therapy. That's therapeutic, until I get totally comfortable."

....

Williams knows he wouldn't be in Chicago if it weren't for Antonio Davis; knows that he was the final piece that sealed the deal that sent Jalen Rose, Donyell Marshall and Lonny Baxter to the Raptors last Saturday.

Williams said yesterday that he never wanted to leave Toronto — "I made a commitment to the Raptors and I didn't foresee leaving before that commitment ended, but it's the nature of the beast" — and if he didn't have his strong Christian faith, he said he'd be really angry with Davis.
