US babies get global brand names
Americans are increasingly turning to the world of popular culture to name their children, a study has found.
Children have been named after big brands as diverse as beauty company L'Oreal, car firm Chevrolet and designer clothes company Armani.
There are even two little boys, one in Michigan and one in Texas, called ESPN after the sports channel.
Psychology professor Cleveland Evans discovered the trend after surveying US social security records for 2000.

well, L'Oreal and Armani aren't too bad I guesss
Chevrolet is pretty dumb though
And I feel sorry for the two ESPN's. Maybe we could get some local kids named EMPIRE :( Maybe jrofosho will name his kid FOXNEWS....I bet when these kids get older people will flirt with them and then say "just kidding, I was just trying to 'turn on' ESPN"

My wife's first child will be named atari if its a girl or chevy if he is a boy. My second child will be named ESPN classic and I feel that I should name at least one of my kids after a soft drink. Good lord this stupidity has got to stop.

So, would you rather people named their children after biblical characters? How about famous people (i.e. George W., etc.)?

Yes that would be better. At least there would be some legacy there. I for one am sick of designer name babies. I hope to never again see a child named cole, collin, colton, Joshua, Matthew, Tyler, etc.
Girl's names I'm not to fond of: Ashley, Jeanette, Mariah, Jessica, Amber.

That was a racist statement frenchfry
You are basically saying white people have no creativity. You are also showing yourself to having a stick in your arse and supporting your own stereotype.
Have an open mind!

Relax, I didn't think you did. BTW, Jacob is worse. (My 6 year old's name. )
We picked it for a variety of reasons, but one was because both of us thought Jake was a name you didn't hear too often anymore.
It turned out to be the most popular name in the state for the next 3 years.
We lead--others follow.

if they are female
Franchesca
Ruth
and other hideous names, yes they will be made fun of by their peers but dang it they won't have those awful designer names that have hit our country like the plague :D

I like the girl's name. No way that becomes a designer name because too many of the designer dimwits would be too pronounce it correctly.

Thanks for taking some heat off of me man. Now if *I* had said that... lol Seriously though, plenty of current comedians even mock the names, and African American ones at that. I guess that's the rule of society. Assuming the ESPN kids were white, you can still mock them though. :-)

I dont know if he meant what he said, but I did. I realize being straightforward is against the trend here, as jimi pointed out earlier, but I guess I kind of like it. If he SHOWED something about white people as you claim he did, then I have no reason to tear him anything. Unlike some people, I'll accept the truth. But if he didn't, then maybe the label police should TOS him. If that actually is the case, then that's at least 3 or 4 non-calls on the label police's behalf today. With this obvious failure rate, I am starting to take King Chimp's and Matt's idea of a vote a little more seriously. :)
J
And for the people who want to judge labels by "intent", then I think the intent of "wtf"(which stands for 'what the *******', and was just directed at me) should be thrown into the same category.
Honestly, I'm with Shiva on this and would rather side with free speech, but if you are going to harass some, you need to harass all equally. That's just simple logic, in my humble opinion.

Now that's creativity!! :) In my opinion much better than naming a child after a communist regime. But yes, having sports for a hobby is worse than brutal communist regimes. It may be goofy, but still in far better taste. I'm sure some of you know what I am talking about too.
