AMERKS DEREK ROY NAMED ROOKIE OF THE MONTH

www.amerks.com

(Rochester, NY)… Rochester Americans center Derek Roy has been named the American Hockey League Rookie of the Month for the month of October. As this month’s recipient, Roy will receive an etched crystal trophy by the AHL prior to an upcoming game.

The Ottawa, Ontario, native has four goals and six assists in six games with the Amerks. He is currently second on the team in points and is tied for second with a plus-5 rating. He also leads Rochester with six assists. In addition, he is tied for 12th in the AHL in points.

In his professional debut on October 10th, Roy recorded his first pro point/assist in a 2-1 Rochester victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs. After missing two games with an injury, he returned to score his first pro goal, the game winner, in a 3-1 win over the Toronto Roadrunners on October 24th.

Last season, the 20-year-old forward was the team captain of the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League. Roy was named the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy winner as the Most Valuable Player of the 2003 MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship and was named the OHL's playoff MVP after posting 32 points in 21 games. He also helped Canada win a silver medal at the world junior tournament in Halifax.

Roy was the Buffalo Sabres’ second-round selection (32nd overall) in the 2001 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

If you're 5-10, 5-11, you'd better be special in other ways. Roy has yet to step onto NHL ice. Hense, he might be too small for the NHL.

AHL stats can be meaningless.

I remember when Mogilny was "too small" for the NHL as well.

I'm sure Barnes is too small....

Same with John Madden....

And Donald Audette.

And Danny Gare was about 5'10" if he was lucky.

These guys brought nothing to their teams, right?

Derek Roy is already known for making up for his lack in size in other ways. That's why he's one of the top 15 prospects in the entire league.

this game is won horizontally not vertically, i would take a 5'10'' guy with some talent and alot of heart , over some loof who puts in 10g a season. the NHL is trying at least to open the game up more and that alone will bring back the not so tall players who can skate and shoot. Way to go Derek can't wait to see this kid play.

I make a simple comment and I'm Absurd. how? Back up the smack or shut up. I know guys who averaged almost 2 ppg in the AHL and still couldn't make the big club. Why? Size. So lick me

It's absurd to be critical of a prospect's size who has never suited up in the NHL.

Roy is special in other ways. And the #1 reason that he didn't make the big club out of training camp was a groin injury that he hid from the training staff as he thought it would kill any chance he had of making the team.

Derek Roy will be an NHLer. Of that there is little doubt.

He has all the intangibles that allow him to play bigger than his height and weight would suggest.

He's a lot like Chris Drury, Daniel Briere, and even Michael Peca in that regard.

I wouldn't go that far.

But, Roy has shown enough last year and this year in training camp and so far at the AHL level to dismiss any concerns in my mind about whether or not size will be a long term issue with Derek.

Derek's heart is big enough to more than make up for what he lacks in height and weight.
