I was just looking out my bedroom window and I can see downtown Denver. All the lights seem to be flickering and have always wondered why this happens. Is this just an optical illusion or what? Does anyone know why this happens?

All the city-folk get together shortly after sundown and simultaneously flick their light switches on-and-off just to keep you people in the suburbs guessing.
I think it's a tradition.

same reason why stars twinkle. its an orginal source of light that is traveling through space. space is filled with particles that intrupt the straight path that light takes. so over a distance, the light seems to flicker because of this. you do not get this same result with the moon because it is only reflected light.

Denver, I am going to need to check this out to see if I notice it. I just need to make sure I am sober first.

The title of the thread made me think of Art Bell. Denver, you can check him out(well, his successor) at 10 or 11pm on AM630 KHOW.

I would but I work part time at UPS and start work at 3:30am and bedtime is around 8pm. It sucks, but I get free medical insurance.
