View Full Version : NEW game: Name a BEER!

StraightJ

Hopefully there are some other beer drinkers on the board. I have delved into many of the lower-end beers in my day, and want to see if someone can make me smile by making me remember some I forgot. Let's see how many we can think of!

The rules are simple, name ANY beer! And yes, if someone says Miller Genuine Draft, you can still say Miller High Life. Malt liquor 40 ouncers are fine too. I'll start out:

Piels is the worst

True story.

In college, being poor, I bought a 12-pack one night. After about 3 cans, I could not handle any more and stopped drinking. The next morning I woke up with a splitting headache, basically a wicked hangover. I tried to give away the rest of the beer. No takers. Free beer in college and the thumbs down were unanimous. I think the left-overs were still in the refrigerator when I graduated.

Ok guys, I have a great college cheap beer story. We had our annual parkfest with as much beer as you wanted allowed in the park, and this frat I was friends with had s garbage pail filled with beer and ice. There were 3 levels(uknown to me at first), and with each level you went down it got worse. Of course for me, I didnt mind any of them, but here is how it went. Milwaukee's best was on top(although I once threw a keg party where the beast got compliments even from chicks! I guess a lot of drinking has to do with your perception and expectations). After a couple of hours, we got down to Golden Anniversary! A couple of hours later by the time I was already hammered, I was introduced to a beer I had never heard of: Iron City!!! I loved telling that story, because the beast was generally accepted as the horrible, cheap, college beer, but I was surprised twice thereafter with others that were considered worse!

Now for my beer to add to the thread, Iron City Light

LOL are you serious? No other name on it? Dont disrespect him over beer, do it because he likes the cowboys! lol jk hurls. I do like those laws(I wasnt aware of them), but how's the taste? I dont like stuff that's thick and bitter, and doesnt go down as smooth as an icy mountain stream! Remember the Keystone(not my entry this post, already used I think) commercials with the bitter beer face?!?! That's what I seek to avoid.

Genny Ice (had this by myself before the Furthurfest about 6 years ago. it allowed me to meet some new characters who found me a way in for free. yes, i dont mind stealing bread, from the mouths of decadents. I found a bus that I thought was the Furthur bus after the show, and some hippies from SC tried to convert me to their way of life on a commune. It was extremely interesting).

German beer has such an excellent taste to it. It is very smooth but has a full taste to it. The full taste makes it so it doesn't taste watered down. Granted I found some really bad tasting beers while I was there but overall it was so much better than anything I ever had when I was in the states.

In my opinion, the only beers that can stand ground with German beer overall is Sam Adams (I love the fact that the Bills have a player named Sam Adams (love ya big guy! :afro: ), Labatt, and Molson.

Beer brewing has been regulated by law in Germany for over 800 years. A long-standing tradition to which all German brewers still remain true today:

In 1165 a fine was levied in Augsburg for serving "inferior" beer.
In 1487 Duke Albrecht IV proclaimed a regulation establishing a uniform beer price.
"One measure winter beer shall cost one pfennig and a measure summer beer shall cost two pfennigs." Each brewer was required to, from that time on, swear a "PREU-AID" (Brew oath) before the ducal treasurer, whereby he would "use only barley, hops and water for the beer, knowledgeably simmer it and add nothing else nor allow anyone else to add anything." This regulation was originally only decreed for Munich. In 1987 this 500 year old regulation was renewed by the Munich brewers.

1493 George the Rich of Bayers-Landshut proclaimed a regulation which was extended to all of Bavaria in 1516 by Duke Wilhelm IV. This regulation is well-known as the

German Beer Purity Law from 1516
"How beer should be served and brewed in summer and winter in the principality"
"Herewith, we decree, order, express and wish, together with the Privy Council, that from this day forth everywhere in the Principality of Bavaria, in the countryside as in the towns and marketplaces, wherever no other specific ordinance applies, from St. Michael's Day until St. George's Day a measure or head of beer shall not be sold for more than one pfennig Munich currency and from St. George's Day until St. Michael's Day a measure shall not be sold for more than two pfennigs of the same currency, nor a head for more than three haller. Violators of this decree shall be punished as prescribed below. Whoever should brew a beer other than Maerzen, is forbidden, under any circumstances, to serve or sell a measure for more than one pfennig. We especially wish that, from this point on and everywhere in the countryside as well as in the towns and marketplaces, nothing is to be added to or used in beer other than barley, hops and water. Whosoever knowingly disobeys this decree will be severely punished by the court having jurisdiction over him by having his barrel of beer confiscated whenever this offense occurs. Whenever an innkeeper buys beer at the prescribed price from any brewery in the countryside as well as in the towns and marketplaces, he is allowed to resell it privately to the lowly peasantry for one haller more than the price of the measure or head of beer stipulated above."

(Translator's note: "measure" and "head" were units of volume and "pfennig" and "haller" were monetary units in use at that time. "Maerzen" was a somewhat stronger beer brewed in late winter, which is still brewed today.)

Regardless of your beer expertise, I hope this is a poorly worded, friendly jab. If not, there's issues. One's tase in beer does not make the man.

In my opinion, the only beers that can stand ground with German beer overall is Sam Adams (I love the fact that the Bills have a player named Sam Adams (love ya big guy! :afro: ), Labatt, and Molson.

Labbat and Molsen are darned good beers, I have to agree. Does German beer go down that smooth? If so, I might be interested.

German beer just tastes so good. You can't explain it through words... you must experience it.

The places I know to get good German beer is International Tops in West Seneca (if you want to know what kind I will post later) and the Beer Store in Canada.

Welcome to the board, Mac!! Your avatar looks like he's had his share of beer too! I like that. :) Is it true they serve beer at Mcdonalds over in Germany?

Thanks StraightJ, glad to be aboard. As for McDonalds and beer, yup they did when I was there but it was not that good. The good stuff came in tanker trucks (yes the HUUUUGE ones) that were parked along side the beer tents during any number of fests. All those hoses running to the serving lines was like Mecca!:cool2: I still have 2 of the 1 litre fest mugs that I break out every now and then.

One of my favorites: Dinkle Acker CD Pils

I was going to bust on you for your bias for German beer, but I give you a pass based on your regard for my beer of choice, Labbatt Blue. (you did mean "Blue" didn't you ?)

Tuborg Red (My favorite when I was in Turkey)

You all really need to experience some of the German (European) beers over here. I just read through some of these posts, and I can tell you that I din't care for a lot of the German beers the first time I was stationed here, but then grew to LOVE 'em. Now, I can appreciate beer the world over, the different tastes from different ingrediants, brew processes, etc.

If I was stuck drinking just one beer the rest of my life, I'd be torn between Labatt Blue and Heineken Red Star.
