BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) - To improve their skill level, the Buffalo Sabres have turned to one of the best players in franchise history, Rick Martin.

Martin on Monday was named the Sabres' skill development coach. In the position, he will be responsible for working with players on their offensive skills, particularly shooting.

Martin was the first player in franchise history to record consecutive 50-goal seasons. The seven-time All-Star scored 384 goals in 11 seasons and still holds four of the team's top-10 single-season marks for goals.

This is good news. The Sabres should reach back to their tradition.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A member of the French Connection is back with Buffalo, after the Sabres appointed Rick Martin as a skill development coach on Monday.

Martin, the first Sabres player to score 50 goals in a season, will be responsible for developing offensive skills, particularly shooting. The Sabres are a young team that lacked offence last season, managing a franchise low 190 goals.

"Rick's got an incredible passion for the game. I think he will be a tremendous asset to our team," coach Lindy Ruff said.

Martin spent 11 seasons with the Sabres, several of them playing on a line dubbed the French Connection with Gilbert Perreault and Rene Robert in the 1970s. Besides scoring 50 goals in the 1973-74 season, the seven-time all-star holds the franchise record with 21 three-goal games. He ranks second with 382 goals and 47 game-winners and third with 695 points.
