They have succeeded in setting up golf courses to take the big hitters out of it. Els kind of got close today, but if you look at who won this years majors, Weir, Furyk, Curtis and now Micheel, you would see these guys are not long hitters. They are course managers and grinders.
The last two winners earned their way on tour. To be successful on the Nationwide tour, great shots week in and week out are not the norm. Fairways and greens consistantly keeps them in the money on those tours and puts them in the position to be in the top 10 which gets them their tour card. That is the game that Curtis and Micheel played during the past two majors. They weren't worried about miraculous shots out of deep rough, over trees and water. Get me on the green and watch me two putt all day long.
Not the sexiest golf in the world but to those of us who hack it out on the course just to break ninety, that kind of golf can be appreciated. One problem though, it don't sell!!!!!!!!!
Corporations and subsequently "we" are paying to watch Tiger, Els, Singh, Love III, Sergio, Mickelson and the likes battle it out on Sunday afternoons. People are only going to buy into the cinderella stories for so long. They want heroes and so do I. Set the courses up the way they were when the Tiger ruled. Put a premium on length again. After all, it is the one part of the game that most of us weekend warriors work on.
