It appears Roy Jones Jr. is in talks with Lennox Lewis &/or Mike Tyson to work out a title fight later in the year.

I'm pulling for a Tyson matchup.

Imagine the payday if America's two most popular fighters get in the ring?

Promotors, boxing authorities and corrupt sanctioning bodies, please don't screw this up. A Jones, Jr. fight with Tyson could pull boxing back into the mainstream.

Well, that and the elimination of at least some of the corruption and idiocy that permeates the sport. But it's a start. :D

This is the last update I've received...looks like if there's going to be a fight it'll be Iron Mike vs. Jones, Jr.

WBC Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis is Contemplating Retirement Now
July 20, 2003: Doghouse Boxing

Doghouse Boxing has just learned that WBC Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis may in fact be getting ready to call it quits. "It's one more fight or nothing, and right now it's looking more and more like nothing." said Lewis to the media.

Lewis has ruled out Roy Jones, JR as a possible future opponent. "I admire and respect Roy enormously. It's a good fight for two great boxers to have. Everyone knows I would win, but there is no point. There is no point to any of it any more," said Lewis.

Roy's last communique:

----------
MIAMI -- WBA heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. could fight either Mike Tyson or Lennox Lewis later this year, but has not entered into a deal for any future bouts, his adviser said Tuesday.

Brad Jacobs, Jones' adviser, denied reports that circulated Tuesday saying Jones will fight Nov. 8 near Nairobi, Kenya, with Tyson as the probable opponent.

"We have been talking directly with Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis for prospective opponents for Roy's next fight," Jacobs said. "But as of yet, nothing is in stone."

Tyson's manager, Shelly Finkel, did not return a telephone message seeking comment.

Promoters in Nairobi announced Tuesday that Jones will defend his title at the 60,000-seat Moi International Stadium. But neither Jacobs nor Linda Padgett, Jones' personal assistant, said they were aware of that fight being finalized.

"There's nothing scheduled at this time, as far as I'm aware of," Padgett said.

Strange, so Lewis wants a Jones V Tyson first. The winner of that fight would have a lot of credibility. Lewis then fights (and demolishes) the winner, be it Tyson or Jr. He would go out the champ, taking with him the biggest payday of his career.

Anyone else think this is what Lewis is aiming for?

i think you hit the nail on the head jimmi, but he would have to have his rematch first.

I should be a promoter. Lewis actually clears things up a bit. Now boxings future rests in Tyson's hands. :(

Your scenario might be right but I don't think it's all about money for Lewis. He's not hurting for cash. I think he wants a superbout against a true contender so he can establish his place among the all-time greats.
If, say, Jones was to beat Tyson and then Lewis was to beat Jones, you'd have to consider Lennox Lewis one of the greatest heavyweights ever (IMO).

if tyson beats jones the whole thing is mute. lewis already ripped tyson a new one. it would be the first time tyson beat someone worth a damn in years though.

Tyson would have some credibility. They could hype his new desire and hard training. Tyson's back! etc etc. It wouldn't be as big but it still would be a mega fight.

Henry, I agree it isn't about the money, that's why I said first that he goes out the champ. You are right, a fight like this would leave him a legacy.
