It took four tries, but Clemens notched number 300 tonight. The first 5 outs of the game were strikeouts, 10 on the night. Career K 4,000 was recorded in the second inning, becomming only the third pitcher in MLB history to get to 4,000 (Ryan, Carlton)

This guy can still pitch. Two phenominal levels of acheivement reached tonight.

I agree, the guys a jerk. Remember when he threw a broken bat at a Met in the World Series a few years back? I still hate him for that. He has no class, and its all about him.

Did you see the scratches on Rogers kid. Damn guy I know you have a short fuse but you don't have to beat your kid cause you couldn't get #300 for a while

I dont agree with that. I think Randy Johnson was definitly the best pitcher of the last 15 years. I think hes probibly the best pitcher in baseball right now, even if hes injured.

Would that opinion be different if the Rocket still played for Boston?

Wolffman

No, definitly not. Even when Clemens was in Boston I still thought Johnson was a better pitcher.

^^you're a bold-faced liar. If you kept Clemens all along, you'd be saying Randy Johnson was Bryan Rupe, and you probably don't even know who that is( he's your 5th starter, hahahahaha). Nice pick-up

I'm serious. I think Johnson is even better than Pedro, and he plays for the Red Sox. I'm not lyin to you guys. I never really liked Clemens, I always thought he was overrated.

You are welcome to your opinion, but I'm not sure how you over rate a guy who wins 300 games, strikes out 4,000 batters and wins 6 Cy Young Awards . . .

Wolffman

The only reason I think he's overrated is because I hate his guts and he was never really THE pitcher in the league. There has always been someone better than him.

Um, 6 Cy Young awards would tend to disagree with your assessment of his ability.

The fact that you hate his guts may have a little more to do with it.

As I said before, everyone is entitled to his opinion . . .

I really don't like Rocket either. I remember him constantly buzzing Jeter's and Knobby's heads. But i respect what he's done, and the fact he's doing it now for NY helps ease my feeling about him

Some head-to-head stats courtesy of ESPN.com:

300 wins, 3,000 strikeouts :Roger Clemens 300 4,006 RJ: not there (and most likely won't be)

Most strikeouts all-time : RC=4,006 RJ=3,777

Most 200-strikeout seasons: RC & RJ are tied at 11

Most 10-strikeout games: RJ=188 RC=104

Most Cy Young Awards: RC=6 RJ=5

The most significant thing about RC's 300 wins/4000 strikesouts is the fact that we probably won't be seeing anybody do it for a very long time thanks to pitch counts, 5 man rotations, and jacked up baseballs. Whether you like him or not, this is a special, and VERY rare accomplishment.

^^^nice. And.. i think RJ had just as poor teams as RC until later in their years. But after seeing stats, RJ may be better, it's basically Expos/weak Mariner teams till 95, vs. the Bosox/Blue Jays
But Rocket for toronto was amazing, tough choice

If your a batter, who would you rather face, Randy Johnson or Roger Clemens. Even with the possibility of getting a broken bat thrown at your head, I would rather face Clemens. Johnson is a beast. His fastball is faster, and his slider is meaner.

The stat that really tells me about the two pitchers is most 10-strikeout games: RJ=188 RC=104. Johnson is more of a big game pitcher than Clemens. In the 2001 World Series, in game 7, Johnson came in to releive Shilling. He threw amazing and the D'backs won.

. . .Isn't that the game Clemens and the Yankees had won until Rivera threw the ball into centerfield?

Yes, but you were trying to make the point that the Unit is a better big game pitcher because of that game, when it was Clemens who left the game with his team ahead. I don't understand why that makes the Unit the better big game pitcher - except that it's all about hating Clemens.

Johnson has 84 more 10-strikeout games then Clemens. That says that he'll show up and just wreck the other team, batter by batter. Clemens does that, but not as often. In 2001 Johnson won huge games through the whole playoffs and the World Series. If it wasnt for Byong Yung Kim, the D'backs would have won the series in 5 games.

Some more stats I left off (and shouldn't have, seeing how the conversation has slanted)

Most strikeouts in Game 7 in World Series history
1. Roger Clemens NYY 2001 10
RJ not top 5

Lowest Opponents BA in World Series history*
* Minimum five starts
4. Roger Clemens .176
RJ not top 5

Hopefully this ends the "big game" knock against RC.

Hmmmmmm, I guess I was wrong.
:ontome:

I'd still rather have Johnson on my team though.
