Yardrat you should leave it for a little bit. It's kinda major, Sammy is loved by the fans (rah rah). I'd like to see some people's feedback on Sammy gettin caught with the cork.

In the game with Tampa Bay on 6/3, Sosa was ejected after he shattered his bat in the 1st inning and an umpire discovered the cork when he examined the bat.
The obvious problem here is with all of Sosa's great HR accomplishments. It was said recently that Sosa is baseball's most marketable star, now his whole image as a "good guy" in the sport may be as shattered as his corked bat.
This issue will probably get big over the next couple of days, so where do we stand here?
Opinions?

I'll leave it for a little while, but I'm going to edit the title to designate it "off-topic". Deal?

Isn't cricket more boring? I mean it seems similar, but in a much worse way.

It all depends if his other bats are corked. MLB confiscated them for testing. I can't believe he hasn't broken another bat in the last 3 years. I'm sure he has. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and agree that it was his batting practice bat. Unless of course his other bats are corked too.
Question: Is this worse than McGwire using Andro - which was LEGAL at the time?

yes i would say corking your bat is worse than using a supplement. How can he say it aint so, im pretty sure it broke in a stadium full of people. Just another example of why todays athelete is no roll model, too bad.

He said that it was an accedent and that he grabbed the wrong bat. But why would they leave a BP bat laying around the dugout during a game ?

And why cork a BP bat??????
This is sad. What the hell was he thinking. The silly part is that I don't think corking helps that much.
We'll see what happens with the other bats. At the momenbt, though, I am not buying the "I didn't know" defense.

Ya right. That was the first time he ever used a corked bat and that was his only corked bat. Who the hell believes that. He has thirty or so bats lying around and that one accidently slipped into his hands for this one game. I was watching his interview last night and he looked awfully nervous. I guess that happens when you lie.

I think that Sammy is lying about "grabing the wrong bat" and that all his 505 home runs are now tainted.

Poor Sammy, now hes going to ruin his rep.

It is hard to believe out of the 70 bats or so that Sammy had that he happened to grab the one corked bat. Then again MLB will never know if he had more then one corked bat because as soon as the bat broke a bat boy probably ran right down and grabbed all the corked bats and hide them. I think the most intresting thing will be if Sammy can hit homeruns after his suspension, with a noncorked bat.

Its just another slap in the face for baseball. One of its great stories over the past decade has been tainted a little. It wouldn't surpise me to hear a Cal Ripken Jr. look alike played in a few games to keep the streak going. Remember what I've been saying, MLB is one of the biggest frauds in America

MLB tested the other 76 bats and found nothing, but why would you need more than one corked bat and i think that the chances of picking one out of 77 of his bats is pretty strange. And why wouldnt he have marked it somehow to know whether or not it was his corked BP bat it just doesnt make any sense to me

I heard Rob DIbble on Sports center last night and he said the players protect their game bats like crazy, and if they get 12 bats in a shipment, will use only the best 3 as "game bats"
So the chance of confusing a game bat for a bp bat is considered small, and should be smaller if you know your BP bat is corked.
Another announcer indicated that Sammy is now hitting one homerun in every 20 AB's, when he used to hit one in every 10 AB's - he could be looking for an edge.
And why do you need a "faster" bat for BP, when the pitches are slower?
I would only cork one bat at a time too, if I were trying to get away with it . .
Its fishy at best

Of course MLB didn't find any more corked bats. Even if they did they are going to tell everybody they didn't. They don't need any more bad publicity.

question for you guys? If you knew your bat was corked and it broke, wouldn't you run after the pieces and pick them up? He went to the dugout and didn't realize anything. Stranger things have happened in sports.

You are exactly correct. It's the same thing as hockey players(Jagr comes to mind) who have their certain "end of the game" sticks. Picking the wrong 1 out of 76 seems far fetched

you would run after peices of your broken bat on national TV?? i doubt it, makes it difficult to play the " i did not know it was corked card" doesn't it. Have you ever seen a player go after his bat when its in one peice let alone broken, ummm ya that would not have been suspicious at all.
