Me and my friends fight about this all the time. Who do you think is the best guitar player of all time is?
I think the best is Slash from Guns n Roses. No one i've ever heard can play like him.
What do you think?

I like Eric Clapton and whoever plays the guitar in the Greg Allman band, and Lynard Skynard.

Danny Partridge, no wait, he played bass.
Ok, since Danny is out, it has to be Hendrix. Could play it all, and played stuff so far beyond what anyone had heard before, remains constantly copied more than 30 years after his death. Only question remains as to whether he sold his soul to the devil on some lonely crossroad, like his predecessor, Robert Johnson.
BTW honey, the 3 Skynyrd guitarists were the late Allen Collins, Gary Rossington and the late Steve Gaines.

Was it coke? I had always heard it was an accidental overdose of sleeping pills, causing him to choke on his own vomit. (There's got to be a better way to go.)
Anyways, there's no doubt that it was the

Coke or pills, there's little doubt that the devil gave him the poison, according to Satanonline.org

I'd have to agree with Clapton, Hendrix, and Page as individuals.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was the best as a group, followed by the Eagles (I love multiple-lead bands!)
What about Angus Young, Eddie Van Halen, Steven Tyler, or BB King?

Jimmi Hendrix, Trey Anastasio, both of who were already mentioned. But I will add that Phil Lesh was the best bass player of all time.

Hendrix was a pioneer and the greatest guitar player. Robin Trower, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Page and Tony Iommi also deserve credit. There are many great ones out there but Hendrix was the innovator and deserves the title as the best.

My top three:
1. Hendrix
2. Santana
3. Page
From my own experience:
Page only plays a basic blues box for most his solo's. I could play nearly every Zep riff or solo. Pretty easy stuff. I can sound like him but not nearly as cool.
Santana mixes lots of blues and Latin scales together. Harder to play but still not to tough. Nobody is smoother. Never a missed note, never sounds chunky, timing is impeccable. His vibrato is incredible. I can play the same notes and sound good but I can't sound like him.
Hendrix is all over the place. Hard to play. No matter what it NEVER sounds like him but it always still sounds cool. Even butchered Hendrix songs still rock! That's a real testament!

Good post Jimmi. On a subject like this, its always good to hear from someone that can actually play. And I was wondering if someone would mention Santana.
P.S. Out of curiousity. BB King. Ever tried his stuff? Is it hard to play. Saw him in concert last year, and he sounded great, clear and crisp, but it doesn't sound like its that hard to play, as compared to say, Hendrix. Once again, just curious.

No BB plays about 5 notes a lot of the time. Fun to play and just cool. Things don't have to be hard to play to sound good.
On a technical side Satriani or Van Halen would have to be tops. But who cares about technique?

Jeff Beck and SRV are good ones that haven't gotten much face time in this thread.
Mick Taylor just plays beautiful (for lack of a better word) guitar.

Jeff Beck definitely got overshadowed on the popularity scale by Clapton and Page. But to me at least, he sounds as good as either.
Glad you feel that way, Jimmi, about things not having to be difficult to sound good. Since I don't have a musical bone in my body, I can only go on what sounds good to me. Actually, I like most of the people that have been mentioned in this thread.
I'll throw out one more name, not necessarily for his skill (which I understand was pretty good), but for his influence on music, .... the original Hoochie Coochie Man, Muddy Waters.

Muddy is music.
A few more names.
Bo Didley (was pretty original).
James Taylor (different style but VERY talented).
As for Beck, he isn't the riff machine that either Page and Clapton are, that's why he gets overlooked. How many Beck solos can you hum? I bet you can hum the solo for Stairway or Layla.

Steve Vai.A monster....Page is my hero. And Ace Frehley from KISS is the reason I play. However no one is the best .It's too subjective. As far as bassists no one tops Buffalo's own Billy Sheehan.
