View Full Version : Kriukov -worst 1sr rounder ever?

from hockeysfuture:

Another Buffalo draftee seemingly headed for prospect oblivion is former 2000 first round pick Artem Kriukov. Speaking recently on a local sports talk show, Buffalo GM Darcy Regier indicated that the Sabres wouldn’t be signing the lanky Russian center to a contract. While the stated reason for not doing so was Kriukov’s contract situation with Yaroslavl, the implication was that Artem would not be in a Sabres uniform anytime soon, possibly never. This is not surprising considering the limited playing time the young center has had since moving up to the Russian Superelite League. Kriukov barely played for Yaroslavl this season, instead being loaned by that club to Siber Novosibirsk, where he skated on that team’s fourth line.

His name will remain on the prospect list for the time being, but Artem could in time be considered perhaps the worst first round pick in Sabres’ history. This is particularly painful when you consider that nearly every player drafted after Kriukov in the first round of the 2000 Draft has a legitimate chance of becoming at least a solid NHL player, with a couple having a chance at stardom.

I've never heard of that guy before. Jeri Himulev redone though.

Artem gets to line up next to David Cooper, Jiri Dudacek, and Joel Savage as the Sabres biggest 1st round busts in history.

Kriukov is likely the worst because everyone in the scouting community thought the Sabres were nuts for taking him when they did. At the time local boy Brooks Orpik looked like the really safe pick. And in hindsight they could have had Marcel Hossa, Alexander Frolov, or Justin Williams as potential top 6 forwards.

Seeing that some of the following players were chosen after himin the 1st, I say pretty close:

1. Marcel Hossa
2. Krystofer Kolanis
3. Brad Boyes
4. Steve Ott
5. Alexander Frolov
5. Bryan Sutherby
6. Justin Williams

Actually I could be wrong but the 2000 draft could go down as the worst draft in Sabres history.

You are wrong. The 2000 draft was MUCH better than the 1973 draft. The only player who made it to the NHL, let alone the Sabres was Morris Titanic, who played in 19 games, scored 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points and 0 PIM. Gaustad and McMorrow have already played and Gaustad looks like a player.

2000 was also better than 1976, where the only draftee who made it was Joe Kowal, who played 22 games, registering 5 assists and 13 PIM.

It was probably better than 1981, depending if Gaustad and McMorrow have better careers than Hannu Virta and Gates Orlando.

1986 and 1992 also sucked. 1986 gave us Bob Corkum and Mike Hartman and little else. 1992 gave us Barnaby and Khymylev.

Shawn Anderson, Morris Titanic and possibly Heisten belong on that list too.

I didn't put Heisten on the list merely because he turned into Chris Thorburn. Now if they don't sign Thorburn, then he'll go on the list.

Yeah, that's why I added the possibly. It made sense not to sign Heisten and the get the comp pick at the time.

In 92 the Barnaby you guys drafted, is it Matthew Barnaby. If so how long did he last in Buffalo, becuase I never remember him playing there?

You never remembered Barnaby playing in Buffalo, but you have a wonderful knowledge of Patrick Roy's career - the bulk of which occurred before Barnaby was dealt for Barnes 4 years ago?

Sorry, I don't really follow the Sabres that much.

To answer players question about the draft, usually you draft a guy but he dosen't play for your team untill 2 or even 3 years later.

Who cares if it takes most prospects 2 or 3 years to become NHL ready? Especially when you'd be giving up two years of watching Kovalchuk and Gaborik light up the NHL.

so they play 2 years later big deal. They would dominate just as well 2 years later.

I just don't see the point in pushing the draft age up merely to speed up the time between a player being drafted and when he can contribute to the NHL team that drafted him.

Past experience with the draft age at 20yo shows that it doesn't make the NHL draft any less of a crapshoot. So if that's you goal, then you are offbased given the facts of over 20 years of drafting 20yo and the results not differing greatly from when they changed the age to 18yo.

In 1970 the Sabres had the 1st overall pick. They were split on whether to take Gilbert Perrault or Dale Tallon.

Perrault was a HOFer.

Tallon had a forgetful NHL career that lasted for about 10 years.

And they were both 20yo when they were drafted.

Heck, the 5th pick that year never played a single NHL game.

Erik Rasmussen?

Thumper
May 26th, 2003, 9:49:31 PM
HA! He (Rasmussen) very well could be the worst ever. Gotta wait and give Kriukov at least a few seasons in the NHL before he's dubbed "the worst 1st rounder ever" for the Sabres.
