With baseball season less than 2 weeks old, it's a little early to give up on the Boston Red Sox. But if you want to know when your favorite team is mathematically eliminated from playoff contention--or when it's clinched a postseason spot--keep tabs on the Baseball Playoff Races Web site from the Remote Interactive Optimization Testbed (RIOT) project at the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1996, the RIOT group has used algorithms from operations research to determine when teams have no chance of catching up (or being caught).

It looks like Boston has a chance to me, at least with all of the talent both in their rotation and in the heart of the lineup. Staying healthy and getting some help from the bullpen are the two keys to the BoSox getting a shot at the postseason, in my view.

My official prediction is that New York will win the AL East and the Wild Card will come from the AL West, so Boston wouldn't make it, in my prediction, anyway.

Yankees will win AL East but i think the sox will get the wildcard.

The Yankees look sick so far. I could see them winning 115 games this year. If their pitching doesn't self destruct, they'll be untouchable in a best of 5 or 7. I picked them to lose the World Series to the Astros, but perhaps I underestimated them. And Jeter isn't even playing right now!

In a best of 5 race...the Red Sox Lowe and Pedro could take out the Yankees...as can the A's rotation...

I like my chances going with Moose, Wells, The Rocket and Petitte against anyone, especially in October.
