Although the WWE made it into an angle, everything Bischoff said was true. His neck is in bad shape and he was hospitalized the week of WrestleMania for anxiety.

He probably needed the time off and WWE thought this would be the right time to give it to him, since Goldberg and Rock will be carrying Raw for the near future.

I got this off a wrestling site

Stone Cold Steve Austin is expected to get some time off due to his neck injuries. The angle on Monday when Bischoff fired Austin was a way to justify his absence from future shows. It is believed that Austin's neck is not in good shape at all and it's most possibly a career-ending injury.

The following news is from PWTorch:

Believe it or not, there was a great deal of truth to the whole Bischoff/Austin angle on RAW. Aside from the very realistic "diagnosis" of Austin's neck, there was apparently even more fact. Steve Austin was indeed hospitalized over the weekend.

Apparently, he has been suffering from heart palpitations, likely caused by stress. Austin has been very stressed out lately, with one key reason being the neck injury.

Austin is also down due to the fact that he does realize his career is winding down and has openly agreed to scale back his in-ring work.

i c said the blind man. thanx. i was really curious about that. it seemed odd to hype his return for so long just to have him drop out again.

His neck is bad but he should be back soon, not to wrestle, but possibly manage.

stone cold manage??? i can't picture that. he's whole character is based on being a man of action. i think if anyone was to come back as a manager, it should be Mic Foley. he's a man everyone loves, and has alot of respect in the wrestling biz. i would love it if Foley came back for any reason to be a part of the WWE.

Well he will either manage, or be ina group of some sort. That's my best guess.

I got this off of wrestlingdotcom.com

Stone Cold Steve Austin requires another surgery fusing more discs to repair his neck, according to WWE.COM.

His future inside the squared circle is in big jeopardy right now since if he undergoes the next surgery his in-ring career will be over for sure.

Basically all Superstars who had the same neck surgery will sooner or later require the second surgery which will put them on the shelf indefinitely. This is one of the reasons Kurt Angle opted to go to the repair procedure instead of doing the neck surgery just like the others.

Austin is still expected to be on WWE TV in some capacity however he's not going to be in any kind of ring action even though he's holding off the second surgery for now.

If he can withstand the pain, he can wrestle but obviously is not the wisest option one can take.

so was that whole Austin walking out on the WWE a gimmik, since they seem to plan on having him back, even when he can't wrestle? or did he really walk out and they decided to forgive and forget??

He'll be around, so will JR. Wrestling is something that Austin will do again, mark my words, but not that often. His neck is in shambles, its true. On a side note, I love that Autobot avatar of your's NJBillsfan. Robots in disguise!

have not heard anything about Austin being in the hospital for stress. That may not be true. But his neck is in rough shape, and he has been openly telling the other wrestlers that a lot of past injuries he's had are catching up with him. Rumor is Ausitn could come back as an anti-commissioner to Bischoff on Raw.
