As the story said, this makes Pedro the top paid pitcher in the MLB for next season. Bottom line: Is he worth it? Is he the best pitcher in MLB when healthy? Is it enough to lift the BoSox over New York?

I know we have some BoSox fans here, so come on!

I agree. When on his game, not even The Big Unit or Zito are as good. But I still think it won't be enough to beat the Yanks', unfortunatly.

The question is can Pedro stay healthy this season. He has a history of getting injured, and 17.5 million is a lot for a guy that is not always healthy. As for the best pitcher in baseball, I think the Big Unit is as good as Pedro, but I don't know if I want to go as far as better then Pedro.

The top five pitchers in baseball today
1. Pedro Martinez
1. Randy Johnson
3. Curt Schilling
4. Barry Zito
5. Roy Halladay

Your list there is pretty accurate. I think he will have a healthy season. It pissed me off last season though when he refused to pitch in his final start. Said there was no point and that they could fine him if they wanted. That was absolutely the wrong way to go about it. If he said he wasn't feeling well or hurt or something it would have been better, but because the team is out of the playoff race, he doesn't feel like pitching, just wrong. That could possibly be the reason he didn't win cy young last year which i believe he deserved.

File this name also under the "he's great if healthy" category:

Kevin Brown.

Although it's been so long since he played a full season that I can't even remember anymore. Anyone remember that rediculous contract he got from the Dodgers several years back? What a bust!

Yeah Really

Didn't Kevin Brown's contract even have use of the team plane in it?

As for Pedro not pitching the last day of the year, that was really bad. Granted he could not say he was hurt, because we know the uproar that would have caused if he was hurt again. Just think, if players of other teams would do that, half the teams in MLB would not even start the season, because they got no shot at the playoffs. This season Pedro has been amazing, now if the Bosox would only score a few runs when he is on the mound.

They need to watch his pitch counts in the first 100 games. If he is to be healthy and able down the stretch (which is essential for the BoSox to make a run), he must not be overused in April, May, June and even July.

^ At least not in the career category, but right now, Zito's stuff is as good as any pitcher in the AL, perhaps even the entire league. He may be the best pure pitcher in Baseball by next season.

I didn't say they weren't. Oswalt is almost there as well, Prior is very good as well, but I'd put Oswalt and Zito ahead of him.

Prior impresses the hell out of me. He has nasty stuff and great control. This kid will be a SUPERSTER. He's already on a fast track there.

Speaking of Prior... the pitching staff he is with on the Chicago Cubs, could be down-right scary... Kerry Wood, Matt Clement, and of course, Prior... reminiscent of the Oakland A's top 3 of Hudson, Mulder, and Zito...

Shhhhhh!!!

Don't jinx the Cubbies!

Seriously, though, the Cubs rotation looks very solid. Injury is the only obstacle in their way to a 90+ win season.

Ya Wood, Clement, Prior are a nice tandem. I wouldn't want to face them. If they are healthy, That's a playoff contender.
