This is the first of many position threads. Who is your number 1 first baseman of all time.

For me, it has to be Lou Gehrig.

A career .340 average, 493 home runs, a career .991 fielding percentage, he was the best.

Any other perspectives? Who is your number 1 in today's league? Is it Helton, Thome, Giambi? Other?

Right now I think Thome is the best first basemen in the game, if he don't drop the ball like he did Sunday on that little pop up. I was disappointed to see him leave Cleveland, and then he goes to Philly of all places. Giambi in my mind is the most overrated player. He is very good, don't get me wrong, but he is not the best. He as a defensive player has the range of a coffee table, which is why I think he is overrated. And it don't seem like the A's miss him that much. As for Helton, maybe if he was playing somewhere else where the nation would see more of him then the minute clips on baseball tonight, he would be the number one first basemen. But I have to throw Carlos Delgado in there. Again the guy is a disaster in the field, but one hell of a hitter, and I am expecting him to have a big year after a down year last year. The Jays got some good bats around him, so teams will not be able to pitch around anymore. All in all, Thome is the best, and Philly made a hell of a pick up, Helton is second best.

If you're gonna go all time, the top five go at least something like this:

1. Lou Gehrig
2. Stan Muzial
3. Jimmy Foxx
4. Johnny Mize
5. Willie McCovey

Today, I'd go for Todd Helton being the all-around best, with Jeff Bagwell and Jim Thome not far behind.

It's funny, because if we would have had this discussion in 1995, Frank Thomas would be at the top of the list. How he has fallen.

I like that all time list, Henry4MVP, but I'd flip McCovey and Mize around.

As for today:

1. Jim Thome
2. Todd Helton
3. Bagpipes
4. Jason Giambi
5. Carlos Delgado

Thomas in '95? Tell me about it...the man was unstoppable there for a long time. I don't know what happened to my boy, but I'm hoping he can turn it around.

Any suggestions for the next "all-time" thread?

Sounds good to me.

On the 1st baseman...

Who is the most underrated in baseball today?

I'd go with Carlos Delgado. He gets very little cred because of where he plays. Mike Sweeny is another name that comes to mind, but I think Carlos is the better player, and just as disrespected.

All time underrated? Eddie Murray, and then Rafael Palmeiro.

I love Palmiero. He is almost forgotten when people talk about great power hitters over the last decade, but his consistency and defence, in the earlier portion of his career anyway, have made him a player I think will make it to the hall of fame.

I hope he makes it to the hall of fame, i think he'sgreat.

What do you guys think of Konerko, Durazo? Underrated?

Konerko is great. Last year he hit .304, had 27 homers and 104 RBI's, but went largely unnoticed. He is a main force in the White Sox lineup, and will be key in their hopes to win the AL Central this season, although he is off to a slow start.

Its funny that because of his illness, consecutive games streak and the fact that he played with Ruth, the Iron Horse's stats can sometimes get lost in the mix. His numbers are unbelievable, including 23 career grand slams.

Ruth could not have hit as many homeruns as he did without Gehrig behind him in the lineup.
