Missing Stu

As a season-ticket holder for the Sabres for 24 years, I have seen my share of my favorite Sabres come and go. Brad May, Dixon Ward, Alex Mogilny, Pat LaFontaine, Jim Schoenfeld, Rick Martin and Rob Ray to name a few. And then a bigger blow was the dealing of Stu Barnes to Dallas for an unknown college kid and a draft choice.

While Stu was not a huge goal scorer, he had more heart than most hockey players. He played this way in Florida, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and now for the Stars. He became popular here because he was hard-working, never taking a night or shift off as many of the players do. He was always ready to shoulder the blame and give credit to others.

During a recent game on "Hockey Night in Canada," he was the featured guest after the game. Many players would not bother to come on after their team lost, but being the Stu that Buffalo grew to love, he was gracious as always. He talked about his love of Buffalo, the fans and his happiness for the city that we have a potential owner finally. When asked about his greatest memory he said it was going to the Cup in '99.

I want to thank Stu for his years of service to the Sabres, and I will be rooting for you and the Stars and hope you get that Cup you so richly deserve.
