View Full Version : the way the draft should be

like many of you i have been cruising the draft sits and pondering possibilities. and as i was reading my copy of tsn'd draft reports it hit me . . . we can draft whomever the hell we want!

no the team is not perfect and you have to play the games, but for th efirst time in years i was not looking through the guides to find saviors or starters. i was looking for the reasons every gm wishes he could draft.

1. for the best player available (because every year teams reach because of need and excellent players fall through)

2. for depth (let's be honest here are no sure things in the draft. none of these guys have even played in an nfl practice)

3. long range replacement for aging veterans (rueben brown) - being thrown into the fire works for some but having a year or two to work with a mentor is ideal.

tom d. and tom m. have a reputation for finding talent and the adams' signing allows them to fully use their skills. sure we have weaknesses - every team does. and we have needs. but none of them are so compelling that we cannot be patient and select the best players available. do not forget we still have money left for free agency and june 1st cuts always produce some surprises. do i trust blindly in tom D? no. he is human and he makes mistakes. but there is no one else in football today i would rather have running my beloved bills than the front office we have now.

Now that we have Sam, I really think TD will draft the best available player, as he should.

there is some middle ground there. You get your value board, and if someone falls to you its bpa. But two things happen; more than one player falls to you you didn't expect and then the tie-breaker is position of need.

And of course, the player falls that also covers a need and you move up a little to get him.

I'm steadfast against "drafting for a need", or being so stuck on a dogma that bpa is the only way to go that you ignore a glaring need.

I would take best player available too. If Steinback falls down to us, I'm all for it. Same with Harris. I think they would add some awesome depth to our line.

I also wouldn't mind taking another DT in the first. If Peterson, Sullivan or Williams are around, picking one of them would be a great option.

I wouldn't mind take Boss Bailey either. I know that all of you are gonna be saying we just signed two LBs and we have Polk and Spoon, but I think this guy is the stuff. He ran a 4.3 40. For a LB? THAT IS AMAZING. Defensive depth is always good. Lets hope not, but what if Spikes or Fletcher go down with an injury....some powerful insurance at one of the most important defensive postions is not a bad idea.

I would also look at Haynes or McDougle. I would take McDougle over Haynes if McD is still around, which I think there is a good chance he might be.

I would also look at Kelly Washington, but unlikely. I would prefer to go with defense and o-line.

I wouldn't mind picking someone up like Trufant, Weathersby or Woolfook if they drop down. CB's get injured a lot and having one of them to be backup is good. They would also be a great nickle CB addition.

These are the positions I wouldn't even touch in the first round. RB, TE, QB, or Saftey. Well maybe saftey, but I think Doss, Polamalu or Hamlin would be available for our 2nd pick.

I think we will draft a CB, DE, RB, OG, WR.

CB and DE will be in the first three rounds.

I agree with your premise- Adams signing does give TD much more flexibility, that's clear. But unless a top 15 player slips (I too would be quite satisfied with the unlikely slip of Harris or Steinbach to 23) I think the Bills will settle on either Michael Haynes or Dennis Wethersby. If they are also gone I would expect a move down to late first round.:cool4:

I think they should look for a speed pass rushing DE, there's a few good ones coming out
