Hi there everybody!!!!! :wave2:

I just registered on this site and so far I love it!!! This is my first thread post! I'm using it to pose a question to every Sabre fan out there. With all the player bashing and trade ideas I've been reading about here, there should be some very interesting responses.

If you could start the Sabres over keeping only one player from the current roster, who would that player be?

In addition, what NHL Superstar, if any, would you go after and why?

I don't know if we have a franchise player but I would keep Satan.

If I get any player (without money restrictions) I would go after a top tier defenseman preferebly a Lidstrom.

I'd probably keep Miller and pick up Joe Thornton or Todd Bertuzzi.

Miller.

Thornton. Young. Skilled. Big.

Or Bertuzzi, as my second choice.

Heatley....Good choice.

I also have to give honorable mention to Markus Naslund.

I think Heatley is a great choice. He'll be the next Mike Modano, but with even better offensive numbers.

Even though Satan is probably my favorite Sabre, I would have to keep Biron. I think he'll be a star goaltender for several years. Hate to lose Miller, but I'd have to choose Marty!!!

Thanks, Thumper! With all the different view points I've been reading, I thought it would make for interesting discussions.

I have to ask you... above you were going to choose Thornton, but you give honorable mention to Markus Naslund. Both great players indeed, but they play totally different styles. What kind of team would you want to build?

I would keep Miller.

Thornton - The total package at center
Bertuzzi - The protoypical left wing
Heatley - Phenominal talent

Now, that in my opinion is an ideal line.

The only problem is that Heatley is too fast for Thornton and Bertuzzi. He would constantly have to circle the net on fast breakouts... not that it's a problem for him.

Hey fweber73.. I agree with your franchise player.. hehehe.. ;) I'd pick Marty as well.. people are beginning to overlook him because of Miller and that isn't fair.. aww well.. only time will tell..

I'd keep Biron, Satan, Connolly, Pyatt, Afino and Miller.. damn I'd keep a lot of the team because they ARE so young and I can see them getting better in the future..

The guy that I would add.. as I said before would be Todd Bertuzzi.. I like Jason Allison and Mike Modano as well.. strong power forwards.. guys that can put the puck in the net..

Oh and welcome to the boards!! :jumpnclap

I agree... I would keep a lot of guys as well if it was my team. But my point is you can only keep one player. I think we all know who you would be keeping  but I wanted to find out who people would want to keep around. So far, no surprises!!!

Marty or Miller

If we had to start from scratch we've got to have a base. One goal scorer can't stand up to an outstanding goalie.

fweber - The kind of team I would want to build would be a hard working, gritty, scrappy, never-say-die type made up of guys like Darren McCartey, Gary Roberts, Mike Peca types. But you need to have one or two of those Thornton/Bertuzzi types to win a Cup. Huge dominant players. Naslund is just a pure goalscorer.....The best in the NHL. The thing about him is you know he's going to score in any situation. That's as valuable as being a large body with soft hands.

But I'm all about players that work hard and never take a shift off. And most of those types of players don't cost as much as a superstar forward, and win games in other ways.

On a gamble i'd keep Connolly, if he ever breaks out he'll be huge.

I'd pick up Heatley

If I had to keep one player... i would have a hard decision on keeping either Afinogenov or Rob Ray or Gratton or Jenerette or Lorentz(LOL). Satan is great but hes getting old and the long time that hes been on this team has messed his logic and his game all the hell up. Alot of these players are not used to playing how they first played when they came to Buffalo...witch confuses the way the player will preform in the future. Most of them would have to be reminded or retrained how to play decent hockey.
I would also have to make a very hard desicion on bring here either Sergei Sampsonov or Sakic or foreberg or The SANDMAN better yet... in fact if I could bring anyone here I would bring in Gilbert Parperault to be our coach!

Have a great day :)

I'd keep Afinogenov. I'd take Gaborik. I'd instruct the team to get into as many four on four situations as possible.
