View Full Version : Woolley talking smack about Ruff

"But Woolley hasn't forgotten Buffalo. He remembers the good times - and he certainly remembers the bad.

Woolley discussed enough of the latter to make Sabres coach Lindy Ruff reply, "I'd like to see (Woolley) go ahead and say it to my face."

....

Woolley described Ruff's work environment as the "Buffalo Brainwash."

"You make a little mistake and you're bombarded with video," Woolley said. "Here it's about the big picture. There's been no pounding down of the guys.

"Guys (in Buffalo) got videoed and pounded to death. Some guys can't take it and some guys can. I could always take it, and I did for a while. But guys like (former Sabres forwards) Erik Rasmussen and Geoff Sanderson got abused there.

"Every time I sat out, I wanted to come back the next game and stick it up your (expletive). I think my teammates always respected that. But it also hurt me in that they started to think, "We know we can sit Woolley out, he's going to respond.' "

-ouch!

Of all the people to talk $h!t...Maybe if Jason had gotten off his @$$ a few times instead of complaining...

First Hasek, now him...seems like everybody who wants out of Buffalo just whines and then they end up in Detroit...but why is it we never get anything substantial in exchange? Did we suddenly become the Red Wings AHL affiliate?

The sad part is, he's partly right...how come Ruff never sits Connoly?

February 13th, 2003, 3:24:41 PM
Connoly never sits because for the same reason he is even in the NHL... potential. His skills are such that every time he's on the ice you never know what kind of play he might make. It's taken him a lot farther than it should have. When the team is purchased, he'll be looked at from an investment standpoint. That will be judgement day for Tim.

As for Woolley, I hated to see him go. I understand that he wasn't doing his job... but who on the team is??? They can't all be put on waivers.

Why didn't Woolley have this attitude all the time?

I was glad to see Woolley go. How soon he forgets that he cleared wavers. You can group him together with Audette and Czerkowski.

I wonder how good he'd be doing if Atlanta or Nasville picked him up?

He'd still be on a team higher in the standings! How sad is that ?!?!

If Atl picked him up, he and Smell-ik could cry on each others' shoulders.

*plugs ears* la la la la la la la.. BIATCH!!!!!!!

No seriously.. we can't afford a new coach for the time being so we CAN'T fire Lindy yet.. when his contract expires.. he's gone for sure..

This team isn't in shambles.. they played well but lost to a better team.. nothing wrong with that

Jason was sub par in 01' and 02', but was certainly a key contributor in our two big runs in 98' and 99'. Remember game 1 in the Finals?

Yeah, it was a good goal. But it didn't change the fact that the criticism was utterly classless. What kind of person would kick a former team while they're down? You can say that his critique was targeted at the coach, and not the players, but it's just one more thing to disrupt the locker room during turmoil.

With this kind of attitude, Regeir should have shipped him off long before he did, but no one wanted him. The Sabres still have this attitude problem, and if you ask me, Woolley's buddy Brown is probably still perpetuating it. Any resolution should see him shipped off as well. Mair can fill his shoes, how much does it take to back-check and not score?

This blurb from the Detroit newspaper today....

Woolley said after Thursday's morning skate that Ruff treated him "with not very much respect" in Buffalo and that he was speaking out for his former teammates. But, he added, he and Ruff "left on good terms" after his trade and he was sure they would "have a few beers over it down the road."
Ruff's response: "Not a chance in hell. . . . He's not having a beer with me."

--------------------------------------------------------------
You gotta love Ruff's response! This kinda' reminds me of the Vanderjagt thing with Manning and Dungy. There might be some truth to what Wooley says....but you have to keep it behind closed doors. Don't go spouting off to the media. As for how the Red Wings and Sabres players are treated?...they are in different worlds, the Sabres don't deserve to be treated like champions.

This team is an inch away from shambles. But every time you think they're going to sink in the mud, they play one decent game and breath life back into us (the fans).

As for last night, I don't know what game you watched, but the Sabres looked like a bad team next to the Wings. Their passes were not crisp, they didn't forecheck very well (at least for the first 35 minutes, after that Detroit was on cruise control), and at least 12 shots didn't hit the net. Cujo is a goalie lacking confidence right now and it shows in the way he is playing. You have to pepper a guy like that with shots. Some are guaranteed to go in. Even when they had chances, they didn't take advantage.

I still love 'em anyway.

As for Woolley's goal, I could have scored it twice with the time and space he had. Nothing special about it.

What team are you watching? They're winless in their last 8 and in 30th place!

And as far as sinking in the mud, they're six feet under.

You're right, JJ. What I really meant to say is that every once in a while they play a game that reminds you that there is talent on this team. It would be easy to give up on them, but then that moment comes when somebody makes a great play and you think to yourself "See that... why the heck can't they do that more often?" It's an enigma I tell ya!

Absolutely. Ruff picked him up and resurrected his career, and this is how Woolley pays him back?

It seems like if that was any other team in the league, Woolley, or whoever said those remarks about the head coach, would have gotten jumped in the game, or at least harassed all night long with body checks and glove washes. Boulton played, why didn't he go after Woolley? Mair is definitely the kind of guy that would do it....Did anybody stick up for their coach?

No.

Woolley scored a goal on us to rub it in even worse, and skated away scott free all night.

I wonder if anyone in the Sabres locker room likes Ruff enough to do that sort of thing for him. It doesn't seem so.

Well to be honest I thought we worked hard for the two goals that we got.. we had 33 shots on goal as opposed to the Wings 24.. they did get some lucky breaks and scored an easy one on Miller because he was a little nervous.. but the Wings were HORRIBLE in their own end.. they didn't look like a very good team at all.. for the most part I thought the Sabres matched them.. we had the better chances and Joseph got a little lucky on some shots..

I didn't think we looked that bad.. had we not taken the 2 penalties the Wings scored on.. it could have easily been a tie game..

And you're right.. every time you begin to doubt them.. they show some flashes of what they *can* be.. it's so frustrating

There is too much respect for Woolley still in the sabres locker room for that to happen, and also Woolley is perceived as being a "Nice Guy". Plus, there are a lot of guys in the same situation there; struggling and wanting a trade.

Maybe if the game mattered, or the sabres were fighting for a playoff spot there would have been something like that, but these guys have already given up on the season, the coach, and maybe even the city.

Woolley is a nice guy....And I loved him when he was here. Him and Zhitnik were unbelieveable in our Cup run. Woolley was always valuable in the clutch times we needed him. He has a knack to score big goals....The kind that end playoff overtime games, or secure your team a playoff spot.

But he's not a Sabre anymore. He's a Red Wing......And he's spouting off to the media about your Head Coach. I don't care if the Sabres had zero wins this year. If anyone on the team had any respect for their leader (Ruff), someone would have sent a message. That's not a message to just Woolley....That's a message sent to anyone who plays the Sabres, or anyone that's a hockey fan. That's characture. The Coach, like most of the players on this team, don't have it anymore. And the players on this team don't respect him anymore.

The sad thing is, Wooley's only the latest one...We've already had Hasek say after the season ended how he was thinking about leaving before the playoffs started...then we had Gilmour suddenly "unretire", go to the Habs, and talk $h!t...and the one that got me was Kozlov; when he was a Sabre he was about as useful as a used prophylactic, and even he talked smack...
...Its getting so that any ex-Sabre that goes elsewhere and has a modest amount of success gets a chip on their shoulder and opens their mouth...All the more reason I hope the Sabres' next owner, whoever that might be, does major housecleaning so that we can start building a tough team, one that will cuase talk like to cease.

(Shortest message from sabreschick yet. I am only going to say alil bit... considering Jason is RIGHT!!!~)

Why do you think Peca flew off the hindges after the cup?
And why do you think these guys have no difference in style of play?
They were all taught to play the same game and use it.
By Ruff no less. Look around the NHL and its super stars...each have their own style of play. The Sabres look like a broken record... uknow why???
Ruff is defense... Your told to play with same player every night and go with the flow. How do you teach a center and forwards to play well with the same guys you work with when Ruff is always changing the lines????

:) <~~~~ CHECK PLEASE!!!

All these NHL super stars have their own unique way in playing...
Unless they all went to the same schools....... witch I highly doubt.
If you notice all Sabres players take all their business to the boards... not to the Middle like your taught in NHL grade school. (LOL)
If your a goal scorer... RULE NUMBER ONE:....... Stay away from the boards unless your retriving the puck or trying to steal it. ;)
DEFENSEMAN USE THE BOARDS MORE PEOPLE.

Just think about it... compare the SAME BORING STYLE you see ALL Sabres players use everynight and compare it to anyother team in the NHL.... I garendamntee none of the other teams look like a broken record like we do. Compare the winning and loosing nights with out style of play......
It all figures out.
You'll see... if we ever get a new coach. Don't get me wrong... I like Ruff... but I too think we need a change. And I hate seeing my favorites after 7 years go bye bye's...but hey..... if I can see we need a change then......WE NEED A CHANGE.
I am always one here to complaine about not getting rid of players like Rob Ray and Zhitnik but on the Ruff issue..... I will not fight any of you wanting to see him go ;)

Peca NEVER complained about Ruff. When Dickerson threw one down the middle of the plate, asking Peca if Ruff had anything to do with his decision never to play for the Sabres, Peca said "On the contrary, I love playing for Ruff." It would have been funny to see Dickerson's face, with Peca giving him an answer 180 degrees different than what he expected.

The big issue in Peca's eyes was Regier - or perhaps Regier's walking orders from Rigas.
