Indiana man charged with stealing cruiser while being chased by police

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana man has been charged after a suspect being chased by police pulled a fast one on the officer and stole his squad car. Authorities said the officer was pursuing a van Dec. 9 following a reported burglary when the driver bailed out near a church. When the officer left his car and chased the man on foot, he circled around the church and stole the squad car, authorities said.

The officer had left the keys in the ignition and the engine running, said North Liberty police Chief Steve Michael.

What a goof, but then again how else is the cop going to catch the guy? Stop the car, put it in park, turn off the ignition, lock the doors etc. The guys gone by then. Time for some automatic locks when you shut the door, with a keypad on the outside.
