One possible damaging distraction hit the New York Jets on Thursday: a brawl at practice.
Three separate fights broke out during practice while the Jets prepared for a road game Sunday against the Chicago Bears, forcing New York head coach Herman Edwards to stop practice.
Tackle Jason Fabini and rookie defensive end Bryan Thomas, the team's first-round draft pick, got into a heated shoving match after a play. Minutes later, during a reverse to receiver Santana Moss, Mawae leveled Thomas with a hit that left him flat on his back.
That got the Jets' defensive players on the sideline seething. So moments later, defensive end Shaun Ellis sent Smith flying to the ground with a violent hit, sparking a melee of about 15 players.
After the players were separated, Edwards ended practice and gathered the Jets together in the middle of the field to scold them about fighting. He then left them to talk it out among themselves.
