I'm curious what kind of musical taste we have here at BBI.

Who are some of your favorite musicians/musical groups?

My favorite band in VanHalen.

Individual is a toss-up between John Mellencamp and Neil Young

Duo is the Bacon Brothers (yes Kevin Bacon).

How about you Joe.

I'd move ABBA up a little bit if I was you.

As far as VH goes, I was in high school during their hey-day and saw a bunch of shows. It's stuck with me.

Don't worry Eric, it can happen to the best of us. At my high school, everything was AC/DC, Molly Hatchet, and VH all the time so whenever I hear their lame songs (VH has some good tunes), I can't help but sing along. I love David Lee Roth. He looks like a lot of fun.

Maybe Joey can get serious for a minute if he wants anyone else to respond to his thread . . .

I like Beck,Faith No More,Soundgarden,The Black Crowes,Robert Plant ,Led Zeppelin and a lot of classical piano.I also like old blues and as an old fart I gots to have my classic rock.(Just not "Freebird...)

JoeMama

Alright, time to be serious! (This is for BT!)

I love, absolutely love, Beck. If there is a premier artist of the 90's-present, it's him. I also like Cake a whole lot. They have a really unique sound. Excellent lyricism as well.

At-the-Drive-In rocks way harder than any band should. Ever. Hispanic dudes with guitars & afros... me gusta.

Here's where my taste gets weird. I love anything from the 1960's. Jefferson Airplane, The Mamas & the Papas, The Fifth Dimension, Steppenwolf, The Grass Roots, or anything from the 'british invasion'. I even love The Four Tops & The Temptations. Go figure.

ps-- Maximus, you're a big Soundgarden fan I see. Good man! I grew up exclusively listening to them. I have all of their albums from Ultramega OK all the way up to A-Sides. Spectacular band.

I listen to them less now than I used to. Their sound is a little too angst ridden nowadays, but nothing got me through my teenage years like those dudes. Their bleak lyricism is just what the doctor ordered when you feel like you want to blow your head off.

Cool! Great idea for a post . . . . although, it's not easy for me to answer. I have a ton of favorites. Since I'm a child of the 70's/80's, my primary love is to the late 70's and 80's rock stuff . . . everything from Aerosmith to Van Halen to Cinderella and all the other hair bands . . . . but I really love music of all kinds too. I love instrumental stuff like movie soundtracks and orchestral pieces. I like classical, most Jazz and a lot of country also. On my playlist for winamp right now, I have a wide variety of songs/artists . . . . here's a small sample:
Bee Gees
Motley Crue
Tim McGraw
Metallica
Boston Pops Orchestra
Aerosmith
Thompson Twins
Huey Lewis & the News
Megadeth
Kool & the Gang
Faith No More
Mamas & the Papas
Queensryche

If I had to pick an absolute favorite, it would be very hard, but I can narrow it down pretty much to 2 groups . . . .

Queensryche and Van Halen

But I really do like an ecclectic mix of music.

SixxGunn, I like a lot of the groups you listed. :) Here's my list:

Michael Bolton
Barry Manilow
The Police/Sting
Genesis/Phil Collins
Poison
MatchBox Twenty
Def Leppard
Bon Jovi
Prince
Air Supply
N'Sync
Boyz2Men
.38 Special
Night Ranger
Various Country Singers (Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Wynonna)

This is just to name a few that I can think of. I like a pretty wide variety of music. And, even though I may not list an artist, that doesn't mean I don't like some of their stuff. I listen to the radio almost 24/7, so I like a lot of various songs. :)

Oh yeah, good stuff here. I have songs from all those groups/individuals you listed except for N'Sync and Michael Bolton. All that stuff is great! I just recently got turned onto Matchbox 20 with an awesome piano/vocals version of 3am. Wow. I really like their stuff now :)

Night Ranger . . . . see, I knew I'd leave some off. That's what makes this kind of question so hard to answer . . . I like too many different groups. Very good selection of stuff you got there.

I got to see them in concert on their farewell tour a couple years ago. Great stuff.

maximus,

Sea Change is something special. It's good to see others who like it.

I heard Beck just broke up with his long time girlfriend, which would explain the series of heavy songs. Paper Tiger is one of the best Beck songs ever written. But my favorites are towards the end of the album. Already Dead, Sunday Sun, & Little One are all incredible.

And if this album wasn't swell enough, Beck has a "rock" album coming out soon! He collaborated with Dan "The Automater" Nakura to make another one of his funny albums like Odelay or Midnight Vultures.

I can't even wait!

Although, you need to re-evaluate your unrapped rule! Boycott all the new rap all you like but you gotta dig the dudes who "kick it old school". If you haven't heard the Sugar Hill Gang, Grand Master Flash, or Digital Underground you haven't lived my friend!

Old school rap music is the coolest.

Joe Mama,Hey ,I can't wait for the next Beck,I love "Midnight Vultures".But all Beck is great.I've got a question....Does anybody on this board jam?I've been playing for 23 years, mostly bass and guitar.I also sing and play keyboards and program electronic percussion.I have an open mike coming up that I run at Corsi's Place in Lackawanna on Friday the 15 of Nov.All styles welcome,we have guitars, basses and drums and a P.A.Just bring your chops and a willingness to drink. We kind of lean towards heavy rock...Oh.what about Frank Zappa?Truly great.

Country music isn't that bad, Joe.

As far as old school rap, I agree with you. :) You forgot Run DMC, Beastie Boys and Salt-n-Pepper. Those were some good rap groups! :) I also like the Fresh Prince.

1) Country music is that bad to me! It's probably because I detest rednecks so much.

2) You're right, I totally forgot about Run DMC & the Beastie Boys. There's plenty of good old school rap out there. I'm probably forgetting a lot more too.

The Beasties may be the best "old school" rap group ever. They keep it coming year after year. They are probably in their late 30's by now.

Have you ever watched The Wizard of Oz in sync with Dark Side of the Moon?

Yep! Sure have! If you are into using the file sharing programs such as Gnutella and Grokster, you can do a search for "Dark Side of the Rainbow" and get the whole thing. It's a hefty download, so make sure you're on a fast connection. But all in all, if you liked DSOTM from Pink Floyd, you'll no doubt enjoy this.

Haha... it's all good man.

I didn't realize you liked Pink Floyd or I would have asked you directly too. I'm glad someone else has seen it. The part that really shocked me was that amazing coincidence when Dorothy finally wakes up back in Kansas.

I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'll assume you know what I'm talking about without actually saying it.

Blur is an underrated band. I only have thier "best of" cd, but it's pretty great stuff. I was a little disappointed bugman didn't make the cut though. I thought that was a pretty great song.

Smashing Pumpkins were amazing. Just curious, what's your favorite song? I'm stuck between "thru the eyes of a ruby" & "set the ray to jerry".

Feel free to call me a sissy!

From 13 I like "No distance left to run" and maybe "Trimm trabb" comes next but overall the album is great an very different frome their previous ones. Unfortunately I read Coxon left the band and roumor say that they are no longer togheter. Shame.

Best Blur song IMO is Parklife.

Best Smashing Pumpkins song?
As George Clooney would say "We're in a tight spot"
I think I like every single song from them. I'd be easy to list the ones that I don't like, wich I could count with one hand.
Best five:

Mayonaisse
Luna
Apple & oranges

Raindrops & Sunshowers

Wow, not only do you have fine musical taste, but now you're quoting O Brother Where Art Thou... On a roll, dude.

Those are all great songs by Smashing Pumpkins. This Time is another good one from Machina. Raindrops & Sunshowers would be my close number 2 on that album.
