Right now the Oakland A’s have a better won/lost record then the New York Yankees, but the A's payroll ($39,679,746) is nearly $90 million less this year then the Yankees ($125,928,583), they draw an average of 20,000 less fans per home game (25,305) then the Yankees (44,933), and almost any team in the A’s division (the lone exception being the Rangers with a team salary of $105,302,124) would be closer to the Yankees then the second place Red Sox.
Another example of bang for the buck is the Minnesota Twins, their payroll this year is $40,225,000 and they’re 14 games in first place in their division with a month to go.
Thing is, even though the A’s and TWIN’s are winning big with some of the cheapest payroll in MLB, they’re not drawing fans to home games. The A fans are only filling 58% of available seats per home game and the TWINS fans are only filling 49.3%. The Yankees by comparison fill 81.6% and the Giants lead the league in percentage of seats filled per game at 98.8%.
Just FYI.
