Referee David McHugh had to retire with a shoulder injury after being attacked by a spectator as New Zealand defeated South Africa 30-23 in a Tri-Nations thriller last night.



New Zealand went on to win, and the bonus point and their points differential will make it VERY difficult for Australia to win the Tri Nations next Saturday. They will need to beat SA in SA bu about 26 points, and I don't see it happening.

Australia need to:

"It left Australia with a mountain to climb in Johannesburg. They need to win by 26 points - or by 25 points if they score 38 points or more - and claim a bonus point to retain the Tri Nations trophy they won last year"

South African rugby bosses have promised a life-ban on attending rugby matches for the fan who assaulted Irish referee David McHugh midway through the Tri-Nations clash between South Africa and New Zealand, with a man due in court on Monday in relation to the incident.
