Chris Gratton would like to negotiate a multi-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres.
However, the 27-year-old from Brantford expects to sign a $2-million US, one-year qualifying offer from the Sabres today.
"I'd love to be in a position of a two-year deal but, unfortunately, the team is not actively negotiating with unsigned players," Gratton said Tuesday after participating in the 10th annual Walter Gretzky CNIB Celebrity Golf Tournament at Heron Point Golf Links in Alberton.
The ownership of the Sabres in currently in limbo and the team is being operated by the NHL since the Rigas family was forced to relinguish ownership of the team when its Adelphia Communications business ran into severe financial problems this year.
"With the team not negotiating, it makes it tough," said Gratton. "I really don't have too many options."
Gratton, who has nine NHL seasons under his belt, is classified as a restricted free agent.
Personally, I think this would be good news.
