I hope England could get it done. The back four of Cole,Mills,Campbell and Ferdinand are going to be tested by Rivaldo, Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho. Who ever wins that match up should win the game. I am also proud that an African team like Senegal is doing well. And what about those Red Devils(Korea) and their loud and boisterous fans. Very nice to see every one coordinated wearing red.

Hargreave is a joke, he is not canadian bironsgirl! it makes me mad when people say that, instead of playing for canada and making them better he is playing for england

BironsGirl43
June 20th, 2002, 2:43:28 PM
Well.. he was born and raised in Canada.. so that would make him Canadian... Canada doesn't even like have a soccer team.. lol.. geez.. we only really care about hockey anyway.. but bduff I hear that Canada is trying to put together a strong team for the future.. they are trying to develop some talent!

PS. I think he feels that he has a better chance of winning international glory in World Cup if he plays for England

yes bironsgirl and hargreaves is 21 and if he was a true canadian he would have stayed here and made his country better! He is no longer Canadian he is British!

BironsGirl43
June 20th, 2002, 2:52:04 PM
Yeah I agree.. I think he should have stayed and been the star for Canada.. but obviously nationalism and being Canadian doesn't mean much to him.. oh well he's still regarded as a Canadian and another reason to cheer for England.. I too wish he'd have chosen Canada though.. but since I like England.. I'm not too bothered by it.. lol.. and yeah he is British in a way..

Brazil wins the match 4-2. They are a scoring maching and have proven that you cannot hold them down for the complete 90 minutes. Belgium did a great job for 60 minutes then Brazil lit the net twice. I know that England has fire power and Brazil's defense is not that good so that is why they get two. Rivaldo scores twice and Ronaldo and Ronaldinho score once as Brazil downs England

I'm a proud Canadian, but hell I could be British, since I married an English girl. My kids are all considered British if they'd like to be, since mum's English. I wouldn't move to England because I can make more $ here with a much lower cost of living, but if my little guy gets good in soccer, he'd be over in Europe in the blink of an eye at 18. That wouldn't make him any less Canadian...just smart to go and play where the best competition is.

Tell me Bduff, if you were good in soccer where would you rather play? Ireland or Canada? I think Hargreaves is doing the smart thing...Money talks, bull**** walks. Do you think he's gonna stay home & play for Holger Arselick? I don't think so.

"Hey BironsGirl: Be careful about suggesting Canadians are British - some of them are sensitive about the Colonial past!!" - reeves

Hey Reeves

You are entirely true about our gallic brothers.

But as for Anglo Canada, I can categorically state I've never met anyone with a serious problem with our past as a British colony.

Remember, when the Americans were fighting for their independance, the loyalists came here.

We were peacefully gaining our independance at the same time hundreds of thousands of Americans were dying in the Civil War.

We stood gladly beside our British brothers in WW1&2.

The British never were or will be perfect.

But considering the four major colonies Britain got to start from scratch turned into Canada, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand, I'd have to say they did a pretty darn good job.

As a proud half and half Canadian (dad finland, mom england)....

Go England!

ps. Was it Gary Linekar(sp?) who was the hero of the '66 World Cup? Watching it on TV are my first memories of soccer, other than the english comix my aunt used to send me. I remember there was a continuing strip about Tottenham Hotspur. I also remember a strip about a big English guy and his little sabu sidekick running around India during the Raj dispensing justice with his "clicky bat". Ring a bell?

England and Brazil are two how shall we say, "not so clean teams" when it comes to playing cleanly. It'll be a nice matchup and I hope that England abuses Brazil. I can't stand their acting, whining ways w/ all the talent they amass. They can't seem to simply try to win w/o manipulating the refs even though they usually are so much better than their opponents.

Anyway, wish I could watch it, but alas, don't have cable...

:sadness:

I've got to go to a buds in the am to catch the U.S. game...

England lost 2-1 after grabbing an early lead off the foot of Liverpool striker Michael Owen. There were a few injuries to the England squad that came into play as Manchester United midfielder David Beckham hurt his right ankle but played on and Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman was hurt later on but continued on.
Personally, I think maybe they should have been pulled since the announcers mentioned their names in connection with the two goals that were given up to Brazil.

:furious:

Yeah, Seaman took a step forward when he shouldn't have & he let in a softie.

Best of luck to the USA...arrrgh...my cable just went out!

Rugby's a good sport. It's a real physically demanding game.

June 21st, 2002, 10:42:35 AM
rugby is for psychos, i don't want my ear to get mashed in. socal some players will play for other countries if they are not good enough to play for their country of birth.

Rugby is a great sport, it's kind of tough to follow, but it takes balls to play.

He's a dual citizen. Would you play for Canada, given the present state of the team?

bduff54
June 21st, 2002, 11:42:12 AM

I believe it is a Grandfather clause according to FIFA you can play for the country of your grandfathers birth. Not sure if thats true, but some guy on ESPN radio just said it.
