ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced today that the club has signed Group II free agent forward Steve Bernier to an offer sheet worth $2.5 million for next season. The Canucks will have seven days to match the offer or receive St. Louis’ 2nd round draft choice in 2009.

The Blues are building something nice in St.Louis, what do their front office and the Canucks front office see in Steve that our FO didn't?

Didn't Vancouver sign one of the Blues RFA's to an offer sheet ? Lol, payback's a bitch.

You wanted to give him a 150% or close raise? Stafford or Bernier, one of them had to be used to get a D-man.

2.5 Million!!!!!!....all of a sudden Darcy looks like a genious. Maybe he's a better GM than many of you want to give him credit for

Yeah, and Darcy had a funny smirk on his face when he said he called St Louis and asked them to wait the full week so Vancouver couldn't make more moves.

Darcy has never had a problem walking away from a contract.

Sure I guess thats accurate, who cares if I or others liked Bernier.I hate losing assets here, I am not going to ever get used to that aspect of having any pro sports team here in Buffalo.

haha nice. Poor guy could very well be on his 4th team in less that 5 months time!!!

Well...then...

Seeing as we were never going to match such an offer if he was on our roster still...getting the picks to make the Rivet trade looks pretty darn cool in retrospect. (I'm aware that we'd have been compensated later...but we needed to trade for a D man Now.

And HA at Vancouver.

Well that's interesting isn't it? Does anyone know what the compensation is? Is it more then the 2nd and 3rd round pick we got? Sabres would have never matched that offer.

2.5 is think is about the max offer for a 2nd round pick as compensation. The Blues have absolutely no interest in signing Bernier. They did it as payback, now forcing Vancouver into paying him as much as possible.

Wasn't Bernier the power forward we needed.

They matched it already. I think the whole deal is funny. You trade for a guy who comes on the dirt cheap...and now you have to pay him a bunch more than you'd planned.

Obviously Darcy mad the right decision (and the FO couldn't stop him this time) there, cause NO WAY WE LET STAFFORD GO. NO WAY!

Parity is a bitch... Wouldn't you agree Mr. Bernier?

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Why? I don't understand why people say this whenever a player signs a contract.

He was like a fart, strong at first but just ended up fading away.

He wasnt the answer. I wish he was but he wasn't

So we got an extra third out of this deal. The little things Darcy does that make him look like a genius when he is all said and done. There is also no way Bernier is worth 2.5 million.

So, St.Louis throws a hissy fit, and drives players salaries up a bit more, making an unproven young player a multi-millionaire.
Brilliant.

Umm why not they made a high offer to Backes 1st. The 2.5 for one year is not very crazy either.

gerbe > bernier

Maybe, too early to tell. We haven't even seen Gerbe in the AHL yet.... but anyway, they are different types of players. We have some Gerbe-types, we're short on Bernier-types.

I dont think we will ever know. Just not here and in this "system" long enough to really know..id like to have seen what he would have become but he was used to get a good player that we just needed more. And if as one poster said it was him or Stafford in that trade I dont really know what I would have done cause Stafford was absolute CRAP last year and played like he was back in Highschool instead of the NHL! so only time will tell on that aspect also(of who would eventually be a better player Stafford or Bernier(im leaning Bernier)

I am thinking st louis calls regier and says they are going to put offer sheet on Bernier. Regier says he wont match but says he can trade Bernier to vancover so st louis can screw them with the offer sheet and get back at them for their offer sheet on their player.

Regier swindles vancover out of 2 draft picks, gets tough defenseman they were looking for and vancover gets screwed sideways on the offer sheet so st louis is also satisfied.

Regier is one hell of a gm. Hope he re-signs. His contract is up.

I laughed my ass off when I heard about this. Bernier is signed for how long? 1 year or 2? I still think he'll be at least a serviceable NHL power forward, probably 20 goal scorer, topping out at 30. Since he'll be with the Sedin twins I think he'll get closer to 30 and people here will say that losing him sucks and someone else should've been moved in his place. But remember, those stats will be 90% the Sedin twins and 10% him, why else did Pyatt manage 20 goals with them? Anson Carter is more skilled than Bernier and he put up 30 goals with them, but I see Bernier getting around 25 if he's healthy.
