Sabres talk to Smith
(WGR 550) -- WGR has learned that the agent for former Edmonton and Philadelphia captain Jason Smith had very preliminary discussions with the Sabres general manager Darcy Regier, and that he anticipates talking to the Sabres again Thursday.

I either want to see him or Teppo in here. They would help this team out tremendous with leadership. I think with one of these guys giving up 1 and 2 goal leads will be a thing of the past. Get'em done Darcy!!

Wow - He would be a huge asset.

Tallinder/Rivet/Smith/Spacek/Lydman/Sekera + Weber/Paetsch/Pratt and/or Teppo.

I could live with that.

This story is from last week. http://buffalorange.com/showthread.php?t=141631 A day before Rivet was traded for. Darcy talked about Jason Smith at the Rivet press conference and said he knew he was close to a deal. For all he knew he was already signed. Pretty much signaled the Sabres were not still pursuing him if the GM doesn't even know whether he was already signed with another team.

I hear ya Pigpen but say the proposed deal fell through a smart GM like Darcy should be able to pounce ,don't ya think?

Smith or Numminen? Who do y'all prefer? I'm kinda leaning towards Numminen. He'd probably be cheaper, and he addresses more of a need than Smith. Now that we have Rivet, we need a calming presence in the defensive zone more than we need toughness.

Jason Smith would make me happy with this off season. It adds SERIOUS grit to our Defense.

He didn't sound very enthusiastic when they asked him. I think he already got the guy he wanted and has about as much $$$ tied up in the D as the budget will allow. Personally i would be ecstatic. Smith was always the guy i thought would be the best addition to the Sabs this offseason, though none of us knew Rivet was a possibility.
