According to an NHL source, the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings will participate in the league's second outdoor Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

The game will take place at Wrigley Field. An announcement is expected next week before the inaugural "Blackhawks Convention" at the Chicago Hilton.

Last New Year's Day, the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Buffalo Sabres in a shootout in front of an NHL-record crowd of 71,217 at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

They'll never fit 70,000 in Wrigley, I think that record will stand for awhile.

It only holds around 40,000. So they won't come close in attendance, but they may still have a bigger gate, dollars-wise. Demand is going to be insane.

I can't even imagine what tickets will be going for. Chicago metro is about 9.5 million ppl. and Detroit metro is 4.5 million.

Tickets will be crazy expensive.

It seems like this has been rumored before. Is it official now?

I live about 3 miles from Wrigley. I hope I can get tickets!

Take away the obstructed view seats and they will be lucky to get 25,000.

I knew the Yankees wouldn't let a hockey game be the last game in Yankee Stadium.

There is only 1 original. Every other city/Winter Classic is fighting for second best.

I'm going to try to go myself. I hope the tickets don't all get snatched up by reseller douchebags though. That seems more likely, given the higher demand and smaller seating capacity.

Hopefully, since there will be no football schedule to interfere with, they'll have plenty of time to take care of all of the ice condition issues. That was the only flaw at the Ralph event.

I'm gonna try and go too.... That hour and 10 minute ride to Wrigley might be the best ride to Wrigley I'll have (being a Brewer fan and absolutely hating the scrubs).

Hopefully Chris Osgood gets a fever and can't play so Ty Conklin starts and we have Brian Campbell scoring on him again with the new Sid - Patrick Kane scoring the winner in another shootout - :)

Talk about the worst two teams to invite... Both of those teams struggle like the Flint Tropics in attendance! Have you ever watched a regular season game in Chicago or Detroit??? Holly cow, you can hear a pin drop in those arenas!

Big cities love hype, the NHL will hype it up and it will sell.
