"I mean, if he wants to debate what our offer sheet did to them or to the salaries, anytime," he explained to Team 1260. "The reality is, Rick Nash's contract a number of years ago, (Patrice) Bergeron's and (Ilya) Kovalchuk's; that sets the standard - that's been going on for decades. I'm sick and tired of it. I know everybody in hockey is. I know our peers are like, 'Well, that's Burkie.' This guy is an absolute media junkie and I guess he's achieving what he wants because he gets his name in the headlines. But the reality is, I hate the fact that my name is linked to his. He's an underachieving wanna-be in terms of success in the NHL. He won a Stanley Cup? Great. I've won six Stanley Cups, you want to count rings? Who cares, it's just a little pathetic that he carries on."
In essence... kiss the rings, bitch!

Wow, Lowe just pretty much destroyed him there, lol.

"Where do I begin?," started Lowe. "He's a moron, first of all. Secondly, he really believes that any news for the NHL is good news. Thirdly, he loves the limelight and I don't think anyone in hockey will dispute that. Lastly, he's in a pathetic hockey market where they can't get on any page of the newspaper let alone the front page of the sports, so any of this stuff carries on."
ouch.... them's fightin' words!!

Good for Lowe, he put up with Burke's comments for a long time, I am glad he put his pair on the table and stuck up for himself. I respect him for that and not just taking what Burke was dishing out.

It still was bush what Lowe did to the Sabres last year. The Sabres flat out told him they would match any offer for Vanek and yet he still gave him a ridiculous offer sheet.

I actually thought both Regier and Burke were jokes crying about an offer sheet to their players.
Thats one of the problems with the NHL, all these unwritten rules, they have them both on and off the ice.
Just follow the rules or change them or don't have rules at all.

We're just pissed that it happened to our team. If it had happened to any other team...say Lowe just did it to the Ducks and not to us, we'd all be saying that Burke should shut up and follow the rules. OR if Darcy offered a RFA an offer sheet I'm sure we'd be like way to go Darcy...growing a pair and trying to improve this team! While Vanek's contract WAS ridiculous Lowe had every right to offer it to him. It sucks since it was our team, but hey it's in the rule books so might as well let them use it! That being said...I hate Lowe for doing what he did to the Sabres so I'm cheering for Burke.

Lowe is tantruming like a child. He definitely showed his true colors going after the Anaheim market. Going after another GM is one thing. A GM calling another NHL market 'pathetic' is way over the line. He's so stupid and entitled he doesn't even realize he probably just cost himself a chance of a future job, not only in Anaheim, but in any market with an owner who is tight with Anaheim's owners.

That is probably a part of it. The thing is though, that Edmonton was one of the main reasons for the lockout. You know to save the small markets, especially in Canada. Lowe then not two years later goes and basically attacks another small market. That is the bush league part of it. Lowe had no chance of landing Vanek, knew it and still offered him a ridiculous contract. Penner was different because Anaheim was up against the cap and probably wasn't and didn't match.

Man the Edmonton vs Anaheim games this year should be good. You know Lowe's comment about the Anaheim market will be on the bulletin board for these games.

Lowe sounds like the bitch to me. The Oilers haven't won the Cup in almost 20 years. Burke won his two years ago. Lowe might as well have Springsteen's "Glory Days" playing in the background.
And if Lowe had any balls he would have made an offer for Lundquist last year. But he didn't because he didn't want to upset his boy Slats in NYC

It makes you wonder. If Lundquist was on any team but the Rangers and Vanek was a Ranger, would Vanek have got that offer sheet before last season?

Im surprised you guys think Lowe is being a dick, have a guy spew garbage at your for over a year and just taking jab after jab after jab and not saying another. I am sure you wouldn't keep taking it. I know I wouldn't. Watch the video on the left of Papa's link, Burke seemingly bashs the guy all the time.
Lowe offering contracts to RFAs is his RIGHT by NHL RULES. Screw unwritten rules, if there is a player he wants then by the rules he can offer a contract to him, I HOPE no one is sour still over Lowe offering Vanek a contract.

Just because something is allowed, it doesn't mean that it isn't wreckless and contrary to the best interests of those around you. If you think that Lowe's ridiculous offers don't have a snowball effect on the rest of the league then you're being incredibly myopic. It's as much Lowe's actions as anyone else's that are going to endanger small market teams or minimally lead to another lock-out.
I commend Burke for calling a spade a spade however I do think that it's starting to get a little much. And Lowe's response was just ridiculous "nanananana....you're not in a good hockey town." Hey Lowe, scoreboard...Anaheim recently has a cup and is one of the best teams in the league. How are those Oiler's doing?

Good post, good defense on Lowe offering contracts, I think it does mess up the market, but its still in his rights to do, he almost has to over spend because it seems like Edmonton is the 9th circle of hell because no one wants to live there.

I think Lowe does make a valid point Burke is seen as a genius, but he ran Vancouver into the ground but inherited a good team in Anaheim. His only gift is his ability to make bombastic statements to the media. I welcome him coming to the Leafs, I see him as a lot of flash and little substance.
